Reference Letters ?
G'day !!
It appears that not only for the visa, but also for enrollment in an Australian university (postgraduate) and for job seeking, I need a series of reference letters from my former employers. Does any of you know what is to be included in those reference letters ? Does any of you have some examples they would be ready to share ? Thanks a lot. Jo.:) |

Re: Reference Letters ?
A good reference letter from an employer should contain the following:
Employment start and end dates Job title & type of business Responsibilities ie. did you have staff to supervise or train Type of employee you are ie. works well as part of a team, a leader, able to prioritise, calm & methodical etc. Personal traits ie. punctual, reliable, motivated, cheerful Any staff training you under took Any further study you did whilst in this employment Any promotion whilst in this employment If you are looking at a Statement of Employment then it should definitely include all of the above plus a detailed account of your duties. Going through your job description will address some of these, no doubt. A Statement of Employment needs to be full & very specific as this is where most assessments go wrong. It also needs to be signed legibly with the person's name typed underneath and dated very clearly, all on letterheaded paper with a phone number included. When I was looking to get mine done I made a list of every skill I had and used since starting that job and everything I had done. In my case this was relatively easy as I am a nurse & we were obliged to keep records on ourselves & our development which we constantly had to prove. I gave it to my boss along with the above list & told her how important it was that the statement needed to be very specific and suggested that what I had listed be included. I got back a very detailed statement & positive assessment. Don't worry about including too much detail. Too much will not fail you whereas too little will! Good luck.
