Reccie or not?

Reccie or not?
We're not sure whether to do a reccie or not. We've both been to Oz before on WH and think we'd like to settle in Sydney. Do you think it would be wise to do a reccie of different cities before making that final decision? If so, what things should we be looking for/doing that we didn't do whilst travelling? Any help appreciated

Re: Reccie or not?
Hi,
We are in a similar situation (boyfriend and I - both 30), we were out in Oz Sep 2005 to Sep 2006 on a WHV and are now in the process of sorting out visas to emigrate over there (got positive skills assesment - visa application to go in shortly). As our WHV was so recent we are just going to head back over there haven't decided exactly where yet just depends on where we can get work, but is likely to be Sydney or Melbourne (we worked for 3 months in both) - we did visit both Perth and Brisbane while we there but only for a short time and we didn't work there at all. My personal opinion is that it is difficult to tell much about anywhere in a short space of time and while in a 'holiday' mode, which is why we are only considering places where we lived and worked. Do you need to decide for certain where you want to live before you get there? (Is just the two of us so is easy for us - to just up and leave and then sort out when we get there - is probably far more difficult if there are kids to sort out.) We really liked both Sydney and Melbourne and will probably end up choosing between them based on where can get work.

If you want to reccie places you'd like to settle, only issue for me would be can you afford it? Is a good idea to check out in detail where you think you'd like to live, our first trip was a test to see if my other half would like it, so stayed where we want to live and checked housing and jobs etc etc. But can't afford to go back as it'll put us further back on our savings

Not unless your reccie lasts 6 months That how long I think it takes to make your mind up.

I think we will do a reccie. When we were there before we were child free and I think you see things differently when you have kids. Schools, activities etc, whereas it used to be bars, nightlife etc
What suburbs in Sydney or Melbourne would you recommend as particularly child friendly?
