RAAF Base Darwin
 

Hello everyone, has anyone got any information about RAAF Darwin. I have been allocated a posting there and now just waiting for my visas to turn up. Can anyone tell me what the base is like and if there is plenty of things to do with family around that area. If anyone has any info on which vehicles the RAAF use there as well that would be great as I am gonna be a mechanic and would like to know what I will be working on when I arrive. Hi mate,
RAAF Base Darwin shows nicely on Google earth - it's colocated with darwin International Airport.
RAAF use Landrovers (Isuzu Engines), Unimogs, Mack Trucks and various load handlers.
Married accomodation is good - all except the houses on base which are very old. You should get a nice place in town.

Thanks for that. Have looked on google earth and it does look nice. Hopefully won't have to put up with this cold weather much longer. Blooming freezing here at mo'. Merry Xmas.:thumbsup:

I am presently RAF and possibly same trade (GTM, former GSE). I was out there on ex flying fish/pitch black back in 2000. It's not a bad place, but something of a one horse town. The RAAF Guys I talked to were reasonably happy there but were first to say that it was far from perfect. I was lucky enough to be out there in July/August (Darwin races - loads of backpackers) and the weather was wonderful. Unfortunately this is not always the case....Darwin is subtropical which means that for many months of the year you will be subject to extreme humidity and tropical storms, from my RAF Hong Kong days I can tell you that it takes some getting used to.

Have you gone over on the Lateral Recruitment System? I may going the same way, though I already have a 175 to go, so if I do then It's because I fancy doing a bit of service over there. Send me a PM if you'd like to chat about it a bit more, I certainly have one or two questions about Lateral recruitment if thats the way you went - I've just had my apps through for interviews.

I arrived in darwin a couple of weeks ago and am loving it.Will be working out of the airport but not raaf.
Weather lovely and hot but the humidity does take some getting used to-nothing that a dip in the pool doesnt sort out!
Very laid back lifestyle

You are quite right, the Tropic of capricorn falls below Darwin, I stand corrected!:D

crikey are u the navigator??

darwin is about 10 degs below the equator where as the capricorn/cancer things is about 23 either side aint it??


nevertheless....blooody warm here and ive never been in such a dry wet.....had more rain in blighty in october...but humid as ****
