Quorn

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to buy quorn in Oz? I asked the girl at the healthfood shop and looked at me like I was from another planet :)

Thanks.

No you can't. I tried contacting the company and was told they had no plans to expand into Australia. I really miss it. As we have one veggie in a family of meatasaurus it was really convenient to make the same dish for everyone and just pop quorn in one pan and meat in another.

No you can't. But a bit of trial and error with alternatives will help you get close. FWIW the Veggie Delight (green Packet) BBQ sausages are good, the Vege (sp) Delight (red packet) bacon rashers are good. Veggie Delight mince is ok-ish. Health food shops have a lot of dried TVP which is a useful additional to spag bol etc. The revelation over here is the variety of tofu and other beancurd products in supermarkets and oriental grocers - if you can cook and have a wok you won't starve. A good quick intro is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tofu

Have fun

You can get natural quorn here, it is called mushrooms.
Quorn is to mushroom as chicken nugget is to chicken.

Very clever marketing

If you're a veggie (or not) & eating all the sausages etc - so many of them contain all sorts of cack.
All the veggies out there, purley for my own interest - would you say you are health conscious & take a note of how processed the food you eat is?
Also, make sure any tofu is organic and so gm/ge free :)

Re: Quorn

There is stuff for sale in Coles and Wollies that is the closest I've come across. Its made by a company called Sanitarium (used to get them in Holland and Germany too). Things like the mince substitute, saussies, that kind of thing.

Hi,

We don't really eat many of the sausages and things, I was just helping out the respondant. We tend to buy as much organic as we can realistically source - which uses involves a weekly trip to Peaches in South Freo. We are not vegetarians but simply don't eat meat, so we have a great selection of fish on offer here compared to the UK. (Anyone in Perth who wants to see how good the fish is should go to SeaFresh in Innaloo). We also always buy organic or bio-dynamic tofu and tempeh (Tally-ho brand I think)

I don't think Quorn is as popular now as what is was even in the UK.

Never seen it in OZ.

Contrary to popular belief Quorn isnt made from mushrooms, it is a naturally occuring mold grown in huge vats, and is actually a microprotien. Indeed one scientist famously said about quorn "Mycoprotein is as close to mushrooms as human beings are to jellyfish,"

Sadly its not available over here, but there are some good alternatives, some bloody poor ones too, its a matter of trying them and seeing which one you prefer.

As I said, clever advertising. It's essentially mushroom and www.quorn.com even state that. http://www.foodnavigator.com/news/ng...quorn-a-fungus for more details.
Bon appetite

I emailed a South African company called Fry's a while ago and asked if they distribute their (similar to Quorn) products in Oz. They do but they passed my details onto their Australian distributor to let me know where they are stocked but he hasnt got back to me yet.

At least we know there are alternatives.

I have bought quorn once, I saw it in a Russian Deli at the Centro Park shopping centre in Nerang on the Gold Coast. I have never seen it in the major stores. I have looked for it for years.:)

Why don't we all keep contacting the company asking them to sell over here? I've just contacted them via their website saying there is a big market here for them. If lots of people contact them maybe it will help? Can't hurt.

I'm really interested in veggies who eat alot of the processed stuff.
I'm with you on the organic front. Is it not that big over in Perth then? Havent eaten meat, fish or dairy for years but been told I should despite a good diet. Trying to get my head round eating fish at the mo - its an odd thought.

G'day

Quorn is a small town in South Australia, NNE of Adelaide.

It is where they made the movie "Sunday, Too far away" starring Jack Thompson.

The whole town is probably for sale.

I stopped using Quorn a few years ago when I found out that they use battery farmed eggs

When I spoke to them they used the age old excuse that they couldn't source enough free range eggs ( although I'm sure with their profits they could have started their own free range farm ).

Does it really matter ? At the end of the day people eat KFC and dont seem to give a crap where the actual produce comes from or how its produced whereas personally I'd rather go hungry than to eat it.

Nope, it doesn't matter. Just hate seeing people taken for a ride. Most veggies I know are in it for the "pureness" and naturalness (? word exists) of the food. Quorn is akin to giant mushrooms grown in liquid state boosted by steroids.
KFC - now that scares me! Think I would rather eat Quorn!

Mind you, a friend of mine here supplies maccers with their beef and that's interesting! They buy the cheapest "best" cuts and also 25% fat to mix in themselves!

At least the fast food guys have stopped making their chips/fries in animal (pork) fat which again, many veggies have been eating for years thinking chips are fine! Potatoes are cool. It was actually a muslim in the US who sued Maccers when he found it out he had been eating chips deep fried in pork fat. I think they all use veggie oil now.

I agree Quorn is a non food really - hardly nice n natural is it.
Most non fast food places have used veg oil for years, the odd chippy may have used lard still but few n far between.
Did the muslim man sue succesfully then?
Here in oz though alot of places do use non veg oil for frying still.

Re: Quorn

I sent an email to Marlowfoods and this is what they had said:

"Thank you for your recent contact regarding Quorn products. We were pleased to hear that you enjoy them.

Unfortunately, as you are aware, Quorn products are not yet available in Australia, and at this time we cannot say when and indeed if they will be introduced there, however we will forward your comments on. Quorn products are currently available in the UK, USA, Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, The Netherlands and Denmark.

If you are able to purchase Quorn Products in stores other than the countries listed above please be aware Marlow Foods have not been involved in the overseas distribution of these products.

Also for your interest as Quorn products are sold frozen, it is not feasible to despatch small quantities for direct sale. As products become available in more countries, details will appear on our website at www.quorn.com.

Thank you once again for your enquiry and please do not hesitate to contact us again if you require any further information or advice
"

So there we are...

I was a vegetarian from 16 to 23. Then I moved to Spain and they had no idea what the word meant (ham in peas ffs). I started eating fish and haven't looked back. In retrospect with Mad Cows, foot and mouth, scrapie, salmonella in chicken, I don't feel like I've missed much.

Hi Mark

Yeah I'm going to start eating some fish. I'v been vegan for 24 yrs so it is an odd thought. But seems for long term health tis better.
Not going to get into dairy - maybe odd bit of yoghurt & feta.
Still weird the thought of eating a fish - plan is this week - hope I can stomach it :)

Wow, 24 is a long time but Australia is a great country to start eating fish in. For a gentle introduction, try a bit of whiting - very light, very tasty. Then work your way up to grilled Red Emperor with salsa verde (olive oil, lemon parsely and a bit of garlic)

Good luck

Thanks for that Mark.

Mmmmm....Yes little by little methinks. I had a boiled egg y'day so I'm starting. My ex has been vegan for years too (a supposedly good vegan diet)..he had a blood test & was told his B12 was the lowest the Dr. had seen for 15 years & gave him a shot immed'ly & told him to eat some fish/flesh &/or dairy & keep doing so. Bizarre that we were both given the same advise seperately. I'm off for a blood test too now. Be interesting.
Quite funny as been here for years & about to move back to Uk but tomorrow I'm going to the fishmongers with nooooo idea so will look for the whiting..oh & salsa verde is yum yum
cheers
