Quick update of our time in Oz so far
Hubby and myself have been in Oz three weeks. It has certainly flown over.
We have found ourselves a rental home, which we are both happy with, and the rent is at a good price to, esp for the suburb of Brissie we are in. There is a shopping centre, with Coles in it, near the house, a library only a few mins walk, and my aunt is only a few mins walk too. I love the house so much. It is the same amount as we were paying for a tiny terraced house in Belfast, with an especially tiny back yard. We now have a big 3 bedroomed detached bungelow, with three double bedrooms, and a big front/back garden. Hubby has found a job, all be it temporary at present. It is not as well paid as the one he left, and with me not working because of being pregnant we are having to tighten our belts a lot. Well methophorically only, my waist line is expanding by the day. I am now 26 weeks pregnant. I am loving the weather. Even on the rainy days the sun has come through for short periods and it has still been warm. Downsides so far - finding a cockroach in my bed, and one in my spuds. Yuck. Also cleaning has taken on a new level of danger, trying to avoid the spiders that keep running out of dark corners. So far we haven't been able to sit back and relax and enjoy being here. We have been bust getting a new house and Tim a new job and stressing about money, or lack of it. Now Tim has a job I am hoping we can start to relax a bit and take it being here. I still feel like I have to pinch myself to believe we are here. My sister Sally said the same thing last night when she came to visit me in our new house. She has been waiting for us to move out for two years. We had a girlie night, with videos. My other sister Jenny is coming up today from Melbourn, so hopefully we will all be able to do some shopping on monday (for the baby). Katie |

Re: Quick update of our time in Oz so far
We are in Albany Creek, and no we haven't had a pest control done. I hadn't thought of it as it is a rented house, also being pregnant I don't really want to be around loads of chemical poisens. I will keep an eye on it though. If there are too many bugs we will probably consider it.
It is good to know that having a yearly blitz of them has worked for you. Katie |

Its the mossies that are driving me nuts. Find out when last the house was sprayed as its the landlords responsibility to do it,keep complaining till something is done especially before the bubbas born. It's not always the case that the landlord is responsible for Pest Control. Here is a copy of some rental agreement terms: Pest Control It is a condition of your tenancy (under the Special Conditions section of your Tenancy Agreement) that you must ensure pest control is maintained at your property. This may only require a pest treatment at the termination of your tenancy, but if you have a problem during the tenancy you should have a treatment done. This will be at your expense. It does depend on how the tenancy agreement is worded. However, if it is at the beginning of a tenancy, and the place is clearly in need of Pest Control, then I agree that the landlord should be responsible, even under the above conditions. (Based on it being a condition that the previous tenant arranges a pest control when moving out). |

Katie We had pest control done, only told to stay out of the rooms while the guy was spraying as they are much more environmentally friendly now, we still get the lovely geckos on the house but the horrible things stear clear, had no spiders, roaches or ants in 8 months so its so worthwhile if you hate those sort of things. We used Arrest-a-Pest and it was $200 for the inside and outside of the house. |
Re: Quick update of our time in Oz so far
Thanks for the replies everyone and your best wishes. :) I will look into my rental agreement to find out whether the landlord is responsible or not.
Donna - I have seen adverts for Northlakes. It looks like a lovely place to live. Happily mossies aren't too much of a pain for me at the mo. I hope you aren't being bitten too much from them. The shops all seem to be closed today, Labour day, so we have postponed the big baby shopping trip til tommorow. Katie |

Re: Quick update of our time in Oz so far
I am sorry to drag up an old post, but I had to reply to the last couple of messages as they made me laugh.
quote "if l saw a rat in the house l would call the pest controllers. " - LOL I guess they can be freaky, but I used to have pet rats who I adored. I find cockroaches far more yucky. quote "How about small annoying kids will they get rid of those" - LOL I just hope ours wont be annoying when he comes along. I have seen a couple more cockroaches.Mainly late at night, when I am getting the gaviscon out of the cupboard - shudder. We are still loving being here though. So far we are happy with our choice to come here. :D |
