Questions for those already in Oz - Please!
Hi
I am new to this forum and am emigrating to Oz next month with my family. Our visa's turned up last month!
We are going to Adelaide as we have some friends there, but I am a little concerned with regards to potential employment. I work in IT and I have not seen too many jobs around on the net within Adelaide.
Is it that there is not too much in the way of IT work in and around Adelaide, or am I simply not looking at the correct sites.
As you will apreciate, my family and I have loads of questions, but this s my main concern at the moment.
All comments greatly appreciated.
Many thanx

I can't help much as I'm not in IT, but I think your best bet would be to either go to www.yellowpages.com.au and look up the recruitment firms in Adelaide, some of them will no doubt specialise in placing IT workers. Or wait until you get here, because most employers seem loathe to commit to anything until they've seen you face to face. Good luck, adelaidegirl

I don't think you're looking at the wrong sites. Overall in Australia the IT job situation seems to be not very good and Adelaide has always, at least for as long as we've been looking at the sites, had far less jobs than Sydney or Melbourne.
Some people on this forum are always pointing out that most immigrants go to Sydney or Mel and that they're idiots for it because these places, especially Sydney, is already overcrowded. But if that's where the jobs are, well that's where people will go.
We'd love to go to Adelaide, have friends there and liked it very much when we visited, but if there are no jobs there we shall have to go elsewhere.
Look on the Australia immigration forum, there has been quite a lot about jobs in IT - or the lack of - might give you a better idea of what's what.

Also the Universities and DSTO have solid R&D programs in IT related technologies.

Yeah, but when you look at many of those defence related jobs it very often states one must be an Oz citizen and or have security clearance which rules out an awful lot of them

Hi, as an IT student all you people coming over is quite a worry!! Better than outsourcing to india however!
anyway I think adelaide is pretty much the worst city for IT currently as EDS(SA gov contractor) cut 1000+ jobs, mostly from adelaide.
I'd recommend browsing through this forum http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-threads.cfm?f=80
to get an idea of the current job market.
edit: for a more interactive discussion of IT you might like to join #whirlpool on au.aust net.org or #overclockers on oz.org

Many thanx for the info. The responses I am getting are pretty much what I expected. We will try Adelaide anyway as our flights are booked now and through the S.A. government on Arrival Accommodation, we have cheap housing for around three months. In summary, it is not the end of the world if I do not get a job in IT straight away. I am more than prepared to look at more general jobs and look for an IT job whilst we have at least got some money coming in. The S.A. governemnt through centrelink offer a Migrant Employment Consultancy Service, so I am hoping this will be successful in my finding work....
