ok. We guys are planning to move to Sydney (work in IT) so looking at places to Rent.

I looked at the map of Sydney..OMG so many suburbs!!! We started looking at locations (different websites) and were pretty lost on which area should we focus.

We are a Husband-Wife team. No kids at this time. I think I will have to move and then search for a job. So hopefully get one in about 3 months time.

We want an area that is safe yet not that expensive.

Is it normal for people to live outside Sydney and then commute to work?

Do they prefer using trains? or Cars? I heard gas/petrol is expensive.

We are pretty open to working in SuperMarkets(WoolWorths??) to tide our expenses? Are these jobs easy to get? Especially if we are just been there a few weeks. We both have no communication issues.

Thanks everybody!! As always your inputs are very useful.

you have to think about whether you want a coastal or urban lifestyle really and narrow it down that way.....
A great beach place, on a direct train route into the city is Cronulla (50 minutes but an easy commute) and although not dirt cheap nowhere near as pricey as more trendy beach towns. Really lovely and proper Aussie ;) If it is more a inner City, 10 minute commute to Wynyard/Town Hall area then think about Newtown/ Camperdown / Glebe - nice areas within them and for the ease of distance to town not a bad price for rentals. Both places are not renowned for crime particularly but like everywhere it has good and bad patches. Good luck and, for a couple without kids it's a fab place to live

lol, I thought they were talking about rent being paid fortnightly not wages... I mean the clue is in the post!

So, the conclusion is that some people pay rent fortnightly and some pay monthly.

Some pay every 4 weeks, and no, that isn't Monthly :D

Actually it isn't. I have a tenant (in NSW) who pays us every 4 weeks, 13 times per year.

Nothing is ever straightforward is it

I know that (my sarcasm probably didn't come across). A per capita month is 4.33333333 weeks or 30.417 days. Four weeks is 28 days; simple! :lightbulb:

Edit: we need a sarcasm emoticon.

My anecdotal searches indiate Melbourne IT has about half the jobs of Sydney for my field and that is being generoud. One reason I am thinking of not moving there. Manufacturing is now the industry getting hit which is Melbourne.

Sydney is fairly quiet for jobs on the IT front. It has been hit the hardest by the financial crisis. Forget about working in Coles or Woolies. Unless you are unqualified or 16 years old they won't entertain you. It's quite different in that respect than the UK. Jobs to tide you over can have a negative impact on your CV and your career.

Melbourne is better for IT jobs and certainly the Melbourne economy is faring much better than Sydneys. It's a better place anyway!

Infrastructure engineer. I did a broader search across all IT and Sydney had double the IT jobs of Melbourne.

Perhaps it had double the advertised jobs. I really dont think thats enough to go on as many advertised jobs arent actually jobs.
