questions!!
Hello I recently joined this forum because my partner and I really want to emigrate to Australia. Im 28 and in my final year of training as a speech and language therapist. After a year of working we are able to apply for a skilled visa. I have so many questions and I was hoping people could help me out . Firstly we have no money so intend to save, how much roughly do u think we would need? Its just the 2 of us and we have no property in england to sell. I have a medical condition, does this mean it will be more expensive to do the medical checks and will i have to pay for medical treatment once im there? One last question... because of my age we would be thinking abut starting a family quite early on in our new life in oz. I read that there are no maternity benefits. How do people afford to have babies??
any help would be appreciated

we are like you and are have no property here to sell so we are planning on having enough to live on for a month and to pay for accommodation etc i guess about $5000 Australian dollars so what ever that is in euros or pounds would be loads

Secondly, I think you will find your skills as a Speech & Language therapist will come in VERY handy on this forum - let alone in Australia!!

Hi Sarah,
Welcome to BE from me too!
Which sub class of visa are you looking at? We came here on the skilled independant sub class 136, which is a permanent visa.

Re: questions!!
I'd also check regarding your medical condition. If it's something that would cost the Australia system you could fail the medical. I'm not intending to scare you since there are a lot of people who have medical conditions and get visas. But if it's something serious then you're best to check it out upfront to avoid any issues.
Assuming you get the visa then you would have the same access to public health care as everyone else. Whether or not you take out private health care is up to you. You're best to do some research to find what your ongoing expenses would be in terms of medication, treatment, etc.

Re: questions!!
I did look at the medicals page and the things listed on there i dont have. I have a benign brain tumour (not as scary as it sounds!) that needs to be scanned once a year. Thats all. Do you think the cost of giving me a scan once a year might make them say no??

Re: questions!!
There are so many visas arent there! Its a nightmare. Not sure about 175, its not one I have looked at so I am sure that if you say that it is temporary then it must be. Just wondered as you said skilled independant but they probably use that term for lots of visas.
Comet555 is right about your medical condition though, I would definitely get some advice with regards to that, I would imagine that they will send you to one of their own consultants - more money!!! Good luck with everything.

Re: questions!!
The 175 visa is permanent. So as long as you validate you visa and move there within the alloted time frame then you can stay as long as you like, and eventually get citizenship. The 175 is the replacement to the old 136 as far as I can tell.

As far as the medical condition goes you would have to declare it and most likely get specialist reports to include with your medicals. Whether or not the condition is allowable or not I'm not sure. The annual expense of a scan might be ok, but they might also consider long term costs if your condition changes. Which, I'm going to guess is possible because of the yearly scans.
If it were me I would try and get some advice from an agent at this stage. I know either George Lombard or Allan Collet on here can point you in the right direction. You would need someone who has a lot of dealings with the medical issues regarding visas.

Re: questions!!
Hi,
The 175 visa is the new replacement for the 136 visa and offers permanent residence - so long as you validate it and reside in oz for 24 months within the first 5 years .
As far as costs are concerned we are using an agent for our 136 visa and all in all it will cost about £3000 - £3500 for the visa (based on visa, skills check, and meds for 2 adults and 1 kid)
When you do actually get to Oz it would be best to take as much money as possible so start saving
Hope this helps a wee bit
