Question re salary
Posting for a relative - an Australian company have offered to sponsor him for a visa - job paying $70,000 (Australian dollars). The position is in Brisbane - is this a decent salary for Brisbane? He is earning £38,000 in London UK.

Re: Question re salary
Not unreasonable but a bit on the low end. I'd be pushing for $100,000

Re: Question re salary
The answer obviously depends very much on the type of work but it is fair to say $70K is closer to 'entry level' than management level for most professional jobs in Australian cities.

Re: Question re salary
Thank you for your responses. There is the opportunity for bonuses but obviously one cannot depend on them. It would be a good "foot in the door" - I have passed on your input to him to help in making a decision.

Re: Question re salary
Assuming its a 457 visa, "foot in the door" is not really in the spirit of that visa type. Its designed for a company where they cannot find someone in Australia and have to look abroad. The salary should be reflective of that.

Re: Question re salary
Sorry should have said "first step on the ladder" - he seems to think there is good potential - he says the bonuses add up to 100,000. Now just has to wait and see whether he is approved by the authorities. Happy where he is but open to new adventures - single with no dependents.

Re: Question re salary
Hi,
$70,000 is $2085 per fortnight after tax (approx) which for a single with no dependents is certainly reasonable money.
The biggest expense is likely to be housing which will be anywhere from $200 - 400 per week depending on his preferences to share or live alone. He should have enough cash left over to fund a pretty good lifestyle.

Re: Question re salary
As long as he understands it's just temporary with no guarantee of permanence and he will have 90 days to leave the country if it all goes pear shaped he should be ok but $70k isn't great, no, it's borderline average. Tell him not to quit his job but takea career break in the first instance.

Re: Question re salary
I think this is a very good idea. We had already discussed this as a possibility.

Re: Question re salary
In Brisbane this is a good salary considering the exceptional lifestyle that comes with it.

Re: Question re salary
In: $1000 p/w
Out:
3-4 Bed House in Brisbane suburbs: $400 p/w
Utils: $50 p/w
Car: $50 p/w
Food: $200 p/w
Save $300 p/w.
I know people that do it, and its not that expensive to raise children if you don't make a drama over them.

He is single - no dependents. Minimalist lifestyle.
