Smile Question For Mums - Child Care Rebate ?

Hi wonder if anyone can shed some light for me - we will be moving out to Brisbane at the beginning of May and have already looked into nursery's (mainly ABC) around the area where we are hoping to settle. I have a 3 year old daughter who currently attends playschool three mornings a week in the UK and I want to get her in somewhere as soon as possible after arriving for both our benefits even if it is only for one day a week so she can socialise. I understand that if you are permanent residents you can apply for a rebate on the child care cost but I have found the Centrelink website confusing - Does this only apply if you are working 20 hours a week - not sure if I will be working straight away, although hubby will have to get a full time job. I know that the rebate is on a sliding scale dependent on what you are earning - do you get this rebate if only one parent is working ?

We applied for this benefit when we arrived, we live in Bayside Brisbane they take your UK earnings in to account from July '05 and ask for estimate til July '06

No matter how much you earn you will be entitled to $0.43.7 per hour to a maximum of 50 hours per week and fees range from $40 - $60 per day ( 6.15 a.m - 18.15 p.m)

If you want to know more just let me know

The hours that are subsidised are dependant on whether you are a stay at home mum or looking for work. I think if you say to Centrelink that you are looking for work they will pay 20 hours while if you say you are a full time stay at home mum they will only pay 10 hours for example (which is one day rather than two days per week). Many daycare centre's have wait lists - and the good one's have very long ones so the sooner you get your little one's names down the better. As other's have said your rebate is dependant upon the wage that is being brought into the household. Hope this makes sense.

I was asked when I called them if I was 'looking for work' or a 'stay at home mum' and I asked what difference it made. That's when they informed me that you were allowed more hours at the rebated rate if you were looking for work. Still, not to worry - the fact remains that child care rebate is available to all

really does depend on income as i stay home and my husband works, for one day per week we pay $42!! if you work they will allow up to 50hrs, if not then it is 20hrs.

There is also the 30% or is it 40% rebate which has just been introduced for out of pocket childcare expenses.
