Default Queensland move to New South Wales Question

I am moving from Queensland to New South Wales in January.

Can anyone help with anything that i may need to do or be aware of ? -I will be renting when we get there and also we will be driving down there in our car. Any help will be great.

Many thanks

Not having done the move myself, the only thing that pops into my mind is the car rego and driving licence thing. Oh, and wear something on your feet!!

I moved from NSW to QLD, so just do the reverse of what I did

Change driving licence. No charge.

Change rego which included registration number.

Update address for car insurance. I saved $200 on that... sorry, you probably won't...

I can't think of anything else... other than 'normal moving' things.

Note:
RTA in NSW is Road Traffic Authority for your car rego etc.
RTA in QLD is Residential Tenancies Authority

We've only just done that move ourselves - as far as I can tell, you need an inspection ticket for your car when you get the rego changed (I don't know if that depends on the age of the vehicle, similar to how you only need an MOT in the UK once the car gets to 3 - our car is ancient)

Also, be aware that the school years are apparently different to Qld - our 15 year old would have been going into Year 11 in Qld but will be going into Year 10 in NSW.

We've bought a house - the process seemed a little different to QLD but not hugely so. Apart from the GINORMOUS stamp duty that applies here!!

Other than that, as the others have said, its mostly just the normal moving things.

I wouldn't drive all the way to NSW in reverse as ABCDiamond suggests. You'll get a sore neck!

It may depend on the actual date of birth, my daughter stayed in the same year stream when we moved up here.

Mine is 1 yr and 2 months older than yours, and would be starting year 9 next year, in both NSW and QLD. However, she was about the youngest in her class in NSW.

Based on my experiences, and the following info, yours could be considered for either year 7 or 8 next year.
If she is allowed to start in year 8, which may be possible, she will almost certainly be the youngest in her year, with some others born in July 1996 in the same year.

My daughter has a friend in NSW, born July 1996, therefore one full year older than yours, who is starting year 8 next year.

Just looking at the current NSW rules which state:

Example of ages for starting each year
Children must turn five by July 31 in the year they start Kindergarten.
All children in NSW must start school by their sixth birthday.
Therefore a child born in July 1997 and turning 5 in 2002, would start school as follows:
  • K in 2002 at age 4y 6m
  • 1 in 2003 at age 5y 6m
  • 2 in 2004 at age 6y 6m
  • 3 in 2005 at age 7y 6m
  • 4 in 2006 at age 8y 6m
  • 5 in 2007 at age 9y 6m
  • 6 in 2008 at age 10y 6m
  • 7 in 2009 at age 11y 6m
  • 8 in 2010 at age 12y 6m
  • 9 in 2011 at age 13y 6m
  • 10 in 2012 at age 14y 6m
  • 11 in 2013 at age 15y 6m
  • 12 in 2014 at age 16y 6m
