Default Quality of the new builds...

Is it just me or does everyone become mind boggled with choosing a house builder and design.

Looking at the show homes you are totally seduced with the decoration inside and then I kick some sense in to look deeper...

They appear to be built on the back of a fag paper and could perhaps fall down if I leant on them to hard! Is it just me or do you also feel this way?

Can anyone recommend a house builder? I appreciate it does come down massively to available cash flow but it would be great to have some opinion.

Is there a definative list say 1 - 10? 1 being really shite...

We are living in Melbourne if this is relevant/helps.

At the end of the day, many Australian homes are timber framed, brick veneer. There are only so many ways of whacking timber framing pine up. Most British people are used to a more substantial brick construction.

My flat in London had flimsy walls, and I'm not sure about the brick construction.

We decided not to build as we didn't want the hassle and have purchased an ex display home by Henley in S/E Melbourne. There were teething problems even with a house already built, but far less than if we had built we think. The main ones are Henley, Porter Davis, Northridge, Carlisle Homes (who we would of built with if we had gone ahead with building), JG King do the steel frame houses. It really doesn't matter who you go for there will be someone with a nightmare story about that builder so at the end of the day its a gut feeling choice that you have to make. Good luck.

We're in Perth and we built with Summit Homes. It's double brick and pretty solid. We were very pleased with them as a company.

However, the windows are crap. Give me double glazing anyday over this rubbish.
