Default Qantas and your one way flight

Hi there meant to post this the other day but had mislayed my pad of paper (well the kids had pinched it to write notes on)

Phoned up Qantas the other day just checking on the baggage allowance for ppl emigrating to Oz.

She said as soon as you receive notifaction your visa has been granted you need to contact them so that they can give you the extra baggage allowance so your total would be 40kg

Then she said that the ticket out for just me for emigrating would be £700 (i'm assuming here it would be £700 per adult) and I never got round to asking how much more the kids tickets would be.
But I was shocked as our tickets I think were £5oo and something return last year.
Sounds as if they put the prices up for ppl emigrating to allow them more baggage and there was me thinking the companies just allowed you extra out of the kindness of their hearts???? Pffft OMG when will I wake up.

Are all the companies like this, do they all charge for the extra allowance if your emigrating? If they do we might aswell go with Qantas cause at least we'll get the points which hopefully we'd get to redeem at some point.

Quantas are known to be expensive, some have had bad service in flight. The consensus goes with Singapore airlines, cheaper, nice staff and more legroom. Subsidised hotel rate stopover with free transport to your hotel on the stopover.

We just got quoted £470 one way with them. Hotels from £17pp on the stopover.

OMG that makes one hell of a difference thanks.
Have you flown with them before? Do you know what th eservice/ entertainment is like on board? Have 3 children and the elder two will be hoping for movies and games and i'll be hoping for hostesses that don't want to kill me when my toddler has been screaming for 10 hours straight.

Singapore airlines are fantastic if you're travelling with kids. We did a recce to Sydney in November with our three (3,7 and 13 at the time) and we couldn't believe how easy the journey was. Staff are really helpful and they always bring the kids' meals first. My only slight gripe was the amount of chocolate provided with each meal. In flight entertainment is up to the minute with individual screens (unless you're in the bulkhead seats) and lots of choice of programmes/movies. You can also play games. Apparantly there is a swimming pool at Changai airport in Singapore which has been a godsend for families with time to kill. Someone who emigrated a year or so ago recommended Malaysian airlines for cheap one way tickets with the extra baggage allowance.

Jen, We flew with singapore airlines in november 2006. Although I cant compare it to any other flight to oz, I can say the flight was excellent.
We seemed to have a little more leg room than transatlantic flights. The staff were so helpful...nothing was too much trouble.
We were regularly supplied with refreshments, meals / sandwiches / hot or cold drinks, especially cold water and orange juice. Not sure why but they came round with these every hour.
In flight entertainment was the best I have experienced. They had on demand movies...about 50. Mainly new releases with a few good oldies. Loads of documentary progs, cartoons / simpsons episodes. They had a good mix of everything.
The console on each seat gives access to loads of games too. The kids can play things like pokemon gold / silver / yellow...loads of other games....too many to mention. Adults can play casino games....agin too much choice to mention all of them.
We travelled right through to Oz, we had a stop over of about 3 hours.
Going there and back...I watched about 9 films, 6 documentaries, 2 sports programs, 8 simpsons episodes and a couple of games......I dont remember the flight too much
Marks out of 10..........I'd give them a whopping 10.

Thanke everyone.
Don't know how you got such a great deal lewandkate cause the woman I spoke to was adamant it would be £700 one way for me to emigrate to ensure the extra baggage allowance, So just for me and hubby to go would be £1400 and then there's the 3 kids on top of that who all would have to have seats my mind boggles at the overall price that would be.

Rosscarbery
Was their alternatives to chocolate though ? I don't mind my older two having it but can't give it to littlen as it plays hell with his eczema, he eats loads though so would proabbly want a substitute lol.
We have this horrible feeling we'll need a bulk head seat for him so we can put his carseat in it, he's much more likely to sleep in the car seat and be happy being restrained that way for longer periods. Are there no tv's for the bulk head seats then ??

Anyone recommend a stop off with small child who wouldn't be guarunteed to sleep at the hotel? I'm inclined to just get there but both hubby and my dad are suggesting stop off at Singapore and I think dad would like me to go see if his old hunting grounds are still there (he spent alot of time there when he was a kid)

Sorry to keep bombarding you all with questions, it'sa all helpful though

Jen, have you looked at the asda website? i put in 27th aug (round about when we want to go), one way with singapore was £355 pr adult and £269 child. You automatically get extra allowance with them (40kg) if your visa hasn't been validated, but some people email them just to make sure and get the email back stating this fact

Off thread slightly, but I don't know how some airlines are able to offer such low prices on IK - Oz.

Assuming fuel used is approximately 210 metric tonnes and today's jet fuel price is around £301 / mt you are looking at around £320 worth of fuel per passenger. The interest on a 747 would be about £40 pp. And that's before you think of operating costs, enroute charges, landing charges, engineering, salaries etc.

Is anyone in the industry able to give a lowdown on this commercially sensitive area?

Are we talking about an eta visa or the main emigration visa ?
If its the latter, does this mean we have to validate the visa with the airline to get the extra baggage allowance and we can only do it on one occasion ?

You don't get extra baggageg with an ETA. Extra baggage is for migration not for holidays!!
Also, be aware that very few airlines do extra baggage now as its too costly for them - Singapore do, Emirates seem to sometimes and Qantas do with a Migrant Fare (usually more expensive than their normal fare)

When we moved in 2005 I spent all day on the internet and phone and could not beat the Qantas migrant special. You could get cheaper but without the baggage allowance and once this was added on it made it considerably dearer.

I have thought about this in the past. All airlines also carry a certain amount of freight on board as well as pets, etc. Perhaps the offset this against the passenger fares
