They've confirmed it's the same jet which had the O2 bottle explosion last year....

Doesn't sound like much of an emergency to me....I wonder how many aircraft make precautionary landings every day - a fair few I bet?
However if it adds to the hysteria I was on a Qantas 767 which aborted take off at high speed in Sydney a couple of weeks ago after all the pilots screens went blank! I should've got in touch with news.com.au!

precautionary landings are one thing - fuel leaking from one of the engines is quite another - I imagine landing one of those on 3 engines with a known fuel leak is considered an emergency landing, not a precautionary one.......

Engine shut down, LP Fuel Valve and HP Fuel Valve both close, fuel pressure decreases, leak stops, no problem. Probably diverted to PER as they were heading for SYD and not many other suitable diversions en-route, and QF Engineering support at PER as well. It was a 747 so has another 3 engines that will easily keep it in the air. BA recently flew one from LAX to LHR after an inflight shutdown........although questions were asked as to why he did not divert into JFK.
Papers must be getting bored of John Della Bonker story already to go for this one.

A Boeing 747 is designed to be able to continue flying on just 2 of it's 4 engines, so shutting down just one wasn't classed as an emergency. The plane could have most likely made it to it's destination, but wouldn't you prefer they stop and have a look just incase?

More likely the unions pushing the story out. It was announced on the radio in Perth 20 minutes before landing - can't imagine QANTAS releasing the news that quickly.
