Qantas introduces advance seat selection fee

I know a lot of people like to know where they'll be sitting and together.
This fee will mean an $80 per person charge for seat assignment on a return to the UK / Europe.

Not for QFF members though

as a Qantas shareholder I demand that you pay for more than that because jet fuel price is rising and they can only hedge as much.
i demand a higher return on investment.

- Its still free as it was before, at time of check-in either online or at airport
- This fee of 20$ per seat is for you to guarantee them at time of BOOKING that is way in advance of any flight taking place -so this lets you guarantee at time of booking a seat combination
Looks like a great service if you ask me, being able to guarantee seats for a family sat together at time of booking instead of time of check-in is great.
Or take your chances and do it for free at check-in time online.

...well it's a service offered at no charge by many of their competitors.
Even, QF used to do it for free over the phone.

BA do the same. In fact they have 2 'layers' of seat reservations, the seats with more leg room ( exit row etc ) can be booked for an extra 'extra' fee from14 days before the flight. Great if you're on your own and you want that great 29A seat with 3m of legroom and great access.

Another reason for me to insist we go back to SQ. As if the quality of the vegan meal and the fact that I'm obviously invisible to most Qantas stewards isn't enough.
(Sorry - I know it's easy to bash Qantas, and I gave them a shot, but I'm not in a hurry to give them another try for long-haul.)

Therein lies the problem. In Singapore The Geek travelled so much on SQ that we didn't pay for personal flights for years, but here he travels much less frequently (which is good) and on Qantas (which is not) so wants to travel on Qantas. Oh woe is me

I just booked preferred seats on Singapore for $49 a segment.
