Default PYRMONT - Sydney - any info on this suburb?

Hi,
Could anyone please give me some information on Pyrmont - Sydney with respect to (a)safety (b)schools (c)amenities. We read about some property developments there adn they looked interesting. Also, has anyone seen the newish development Jacksons landing ? It is a harbour front development and looks pretty good on the website. They don't have much information though.

Thanks all
Anya xx

Pyrmont is certainly handy for the city (can easily walk there) but not really a family area. Was once a working class suburb of dockworkers but now the few parts of Pyrmont that aren't freeways/roads/flyovers/Darling Harbour or the Casino are large blocks of apartments. Jacksons Landing was the CSR Sugar Refinery once. It looks great in the photos but really the area is more suited to young singles and empty-nesters than traditional families. Pyrmont is one area where property investors are having trouble letting - there's an over-supply of apartments here.

There's public school at Ultimo which is likely to be quite multi-cultural. Don't know of any other schools in the area. I think the nearest High School would be at Glebe. Nearest proper shopping centre (with a supermarket and day-to-day shops, rather than the touristy Darling Harbour shops) is probably at Broadway.

It is a nice part of the world.. on the harbour and near the city more for DINKS and retired folk not families, it isn't cheap. But if you are attracted to unit or town house living, the area has a lot going for it.

Thanks Banksia and Nickyc !

Doesn't look like the place for us then ! I would prefer a place with easy access to good schools, more families with kids (rather than DINKS, retired).

We have decided on Melbourne (husband's decision really!) though I am keen on Sydney.

Cheers
