Default Public Service Redundancy Costs Pass One Billion Dollars

All well and good but let's hope this Federal Liberal government is not about to repeat the former Lib fiasco, imposed on citizens after the 96 Howard election.
Then they went on spending cuts cutting the number of employees by offering very acceptable voluntary redundancy packages, which were in many cases taken up by those earning the most and most needed, so much so that countless numbers were brought back as very expensive consultants.
Often at rates almost double the pay.

Will history repeat itself. Just odd how the Lib's retain the aura of being sound economic managers. Fact being neither main party qualify in the handling of money.

Why not? Newman managed to do it in Queensland after the last state election, sack everybody and bring in consultants at $1500 to $3000+ per week....Abbott and Hockey are now going to make some migrants pay to fix the Federal deficit.....

I expect little will change. Public perception will applaud the alleged cutting of waste without being made aware of the real facts and costs will blow out.

Immigration is a major part of the business strategy to gorge money and keep the economy ticking over, along with the housing area of course. Both are tied so one shouldn't be too perplexed at ever increasing immigration costs.

Jeff Kennet actually did this to my wife when they closed all the Mental Health institutions in Victoria. Redundancy from Larundel and not supposed to work for the Government for another 5 years... back in Government employ within 3 months at the Royal Melbourne. She figured she would be doing agency for that period instead of back on the books.

So the Liberals do have a track record of this kind of blind stupidity.

Jeff went on to be a great advocate for those inflicted by mental illness as well. Shame his empathy was little in evidence while in power and of course came only came into being after he experienced the horror of the black dog.

$1500 - $3000 per week sounds cheap for consultancy rates in many sectors.

Get in, get the job done, get out, they can terminate a consultant at any time without cost and only bring them on board when needed.

Sounds like a good overall saving to me.

The $1500 is what a guy I used to work with was getting after tax for 3 days consultancy work for Health.....

He told me that work tried to rehire him for 5 days a week (at half what he was then making as a consultant) and he told them they couldn't match what he was getting...they didn't believe him until he pulled out his paperwork....

Last I heard he now has 2 or 3 subbies working for him and is clearing just under a grand in the fees they pay him per week.....and that is in addition to his superannuation and service pension from over 20 years in the Navy, plus his Queenslander house is valued over $1m...not to mention his wife works in a high paying job.
