Default Pub and social life in and around Coomera, GC

Hi Guys

We have finally done it, made the descision to 'just do it'. I have handed in my notice at work and we are moving out to Coomera mid October. Originally looking at Kallangur, north of Brisbane but I just had a good feeling about the GC.

As I have said on a previous thread, my husband is craving male company and a few beer buddies. What is the social and pub life like around this area?

We also have a 17/18 year old daughter who is having a bit of a tough time at the moment, fretting about the move and the impact it will have on her and her social life, whats the area like for this age group, is there much to do?

We have tried to do a bit of research on this area, but anyone living there will have first hand experience, so any comments appreciated.

Thanks Debbie

A little bit of everything really.

We had a little bit of a reccie during our six day stay in Brisbane. We drove up and had a look around kallangur area and felt very ambivilent about it.

We much prefered the Gold Coast and had a great day out down that way. It just looked a bit more lively and buzzing (although the coast was a bit quiet but it wasnt a very sunny day).

I have read a few groups on BE, organising social activities in the area which appeals to us, as we are desperate to make some friends!

My husbands job is in the Springwood area, South of Brisbane and he leaves very early in the morning for work, so I dont think traffic is going to be a huge problem for him. He also has a work vehicle.

We like fishing and there appears to be lots of opportunities for this activity in this area.

My daughter and I like good shopping facilities, cafe culture and brunching and we hope there will be some of that in the area.

Like I say - lots of reasons but nothing imparticular. We are actually terrified of making the wrong descision, as we have migrated once before (to NZ) and really dont want to be doing it all again, we are nearly at rock bottom financially as it is!

We do have the benefit of doing it all once, so are possibly more aware of what can go right and what can go wrong making such a huge leap.

Just looking for a bit of 'piece of mind'.

I'm a fabricator/welder and Dee is a Quality Manager, both still looking'ish for work (maybe look a bit harder next month) What do you and OH do for work? Give us a shout when you get here and we can go for some food and drink at the boathouse tavern just down from the themeparks.

We live in Upper Coomera so if I can be of help to anyone ....

With regard to your question, there isn't really a pub culture here. We have a place called the 'Lost City' where you can have a drink, something to eat, watch the footie/rugby and have a game of pool. We have been there a couple of times but early in the evening or for tea. It also has its own nightclub apparently but we have never been.

Then there is the Oxenford Tavern which has a bar and also a family meals room. About 15 mins away is the English pub but it is really for dining.

Coomera Valley, a very beautiful place. Have any of you venture into Lamington National Park at Binna Burra, and taken the walk up to the top of the Range?

Take a walk and take your kids, it is spectacular country. Especially Coomera Crevice, where Coomera Creek descends from the escarpment.

The attached photos are from my canyoning days (LOL...in the late 70s) and a day trip down Coomera Crevice...enjoy:

Coomera Falls is the smaller set with Coomera Crevice above it.

Descending into the Crevice.

Off rope, and then there is a bit of a swim. This is still above the Coomera Falls.

Lunch on top of the falls, looking up at the track lookout point, with people looking down at us.

Thanks guys for all your reply's

Thanks Trev and Dee, will really look forward to a night out - we are due out the week beginning 13th October. Just started to self pack this weekend and its sinking in now that were finally coming.

Simon and I (Debbie) are both 42 years and have a 17 yr old - 18 in December here with us in NZ. We also have a 20 year old daughter living in the UK. Other half is a painter and decorator and I am an Interior Designer.

Scrawni 2 - We know there is no pub culture out there as such - we have been in NZ for the past four years and there certainly isn't anything like it over here. There are pubs, but no pub culture. My husband is just craving some male company to talk male 'rubbish' with over a pint of beer - even if its in a back garden!

Coomera area is a bit of a 'gut feeling' for us, and cant wait now to get there.

Hi,
We live just down the road from Coomera. My OH goes to a pub called 'The Coomera' It's certainly not a posh place, but very friendly, all sorts of banter there, sure your OH will love it. it is the kind of place you can go into on your own, as someone will ALWAYS talk to you It's actually on the border of Oxenford and Maudsland, but the areas all sort of 'run' into each other. Hope Island Tavern is another one they go to occasionally
Sure your daughter will be fine, willl she be going to TAFE or anything like that? Good way of making friends, we have a 17 year old boy and made him go back to school for this reason!

As for shopping you will have Westfield at Helensvale, Runaway Bay, Harbour Town (my fave) and hopefully one day (soon?) the new huge Coomera Town Centre, then further up the Pacific Motorway Loganholme, which is full of shops and surrounded by nice eating places.

Send me a pm closer to when you're moving and I'm sure my OH will be able to sort a night out

Edit to add my OH waterskiis on the lake, adjacent to the Coomera River, lots of fishing areas around there too.

Niki

We visited Coomera on a reccie in February 2007 and also got the same feeling that the area maybe "right" for us but couldnt find any real reason why we thought like that - just a "gut" feeling I suppose.

We have a case officer and have sold our house now so just wating for visa grant - hope to be out there by end of January 2009.

We are a family of five, both me and my other half Rob are 44, we have three boys age 13, 15 and 18 coming with us. Must admit I have no worries about the younger two but wonder how the 18 year old will settle. He has a large social network here, loves riding his motorbike, going to the pub and of course his music (he is a drummer, used to be in a band but due to them all going off to uni this is on hold a bit now).

I have been offered a job as a Midwife at the Gold Coast hospital so Coomera didn't seem too far away. Would to hear the experiences of others living in and around Coomera. We too like "good" shopping and eating places, going to the cinema and family days out.

Any tips and hints on settling in this area would be much appreciated.

Jackie

My brother lives in Coomera and I'll be there at christmas.

My experience of Australian pubs is that you are expected to leave your brain at the door, order a drink and sit down and wait for someone to hit you.

It seems that most socialising of a not violent nature takes place in gardens or decks. If there is a pub that's an exception to this ( the Mercantile on the Rocksin Sydney springs to mind) I'd love to hear about it. I might try The Coomera and see.

Well Coomera Tavern is not like that at all! It's the sort of place you can easily go in alone and people will chat to you. I don't know of any around here the same as you mention!
