Default PS2, DVD'S etc.

Our 11 year old son is VERY worried that his PS2, hi-fi, radio, mobile phone will not work in Oz!! PLEASE could anyone enlighten us asap to put his mind at rest. Which of these items are ok and which are not.
Also for our own benefit do DVD players and video players work out there? I know TV's don't.

Not sure about the VCR player, but UK videos themselves will play on Australian players.

The UK and Australia are in different so-called 'DVD regions' (2 and 4 respectively) so a UK DVD will not play an an Australian player (or vice versa) unless the player is 'multi-region'. Some DVD players are multi-region, others are not.

We have a DVD player which I think is multi region, so sounds like that should be ok, even if we buy DVD'S out there. Otherwise it means selling lots of our DVD's and the player and starting new in Oz. Life can be very complicated, but I'm sure it'll be worth it!!!
Thanks

Most players can be made region specific using a code entered fro ma remote control or a file burned to a CD-R.

..........You could also use the ps2 to watch your dvds...if you want it to watch Ausssie dvds you need a cd called 'DVD region x' do a search on Ebay for it...they go for about £5-10 that's all. (you put the region x cd into your ps2 and it will then play 'any' region dvd).

The Ps2 will work fine with Oz tv. The games are quite expensive to buy on new release though. For example Spiderman 2 is $96 at the moment.

Also if your DVD can't be cracked you can get a region free dvd from $65.

- Hi-fi/radio - YES (mains voltage is the same as UK, as are radio frequencies)

- mobile phone - YES, if it is a GSM phone (most in UK are), you'll just need a new SIM card when you get to Oz, either prepay or contract.

- TV - definitely NO. Although Oz uses PAL, it is slightly different and you can tune in the picture but not sound (I believe, but check previous threads on this topic)

- video - YES to watch videos (both UK and Oz tapes, even through an Oz TV) but NO to recording from TV. We brought ours because it wasn't worth selling and funnily enough it tunes in to ABC, Channel 10 and SBS perfectly but Channel 7 and 9 only get picture, no sound. Go figure!! We use our mainly for the childrens' extensive collection of (UK bought) Bob the Builder etc, and also for rentals. There isn't much worth recording on Oz TV anyway!!

Also if you buy an Australian video recorder it will play UK tapes fine.

Hi
we brought playstations, video recorder, stereo and tv.The first 3 work fine with no problems, the tv we gave to our kids as you can still connect and play playstation and videos just not pick up Australian tv.It saved us buying 2 tvs just so they could play games-we only bought one to connect to cable.
Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. Now all we have to decide is whether it's worth the expense of shipping out or buying new, but I know that's on another thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My son will be v. happy although he loves his footy and being outdoors so will only use his PS2 occassionally I'm sure.

Hi

This is the zilliononth thread on this and the more I read about it the more confused I become!!

I was under the impression that UK tv's work if they are hooked up to an Australian video as it picks up the Australian PAL signal. We have 2 PAL tv's which we are (thought) we were taking. Can someone in Oz give us the difinitive answer??!!!

I know the DVD and other gizmo situations but this bloody TV carry on has me more confused than DIMIA!!

Default TV or not TV - that is the question

Walla
I recently "won" a nice JVC 100Hz 32" flat screen telly.
I was unsure if it would work in oz (I am not there yet).
I emailed JVC and they said it WOULD work BUT to pick up Australian TV it would have to be connected to a video or cable and watch the channels through them. Basically, the frequencies built in to detect terrestial TV stations are different so one could not detect local TV stations.
Signals for video, cable and satellite are different altogether and will be picked up and channels through these will be fine.
I am no expert
These are the words from JVC
If in doubt, contact your TV manufacturer

Andrew
