We have done it both ways and would recommend, depending of the state of your stuff, that shipping worked out to be a lot cheaper than replacing everything.

We moved to Adelaide last year and did not take anything and its cost a hell of a lot to replace everything so when we returned we shipped it all. Now we are returning again, we definatley are shipping it all.

We have been quoted £3000 for a shared container and would not be able to replace evertything for that amount of money.

Its a good excuse to buy new when you get there if you dont take it, but to be honest with you, you are settling in to a new country, new car, new job ect, do you really want the stress of shopping for everything aswell. We have got two children and it was bad enough dragging them around for looking for rentals and cars with out having to drag them around shops too.

Each to their own I suppose, but thats my opinion.

we have a while to go yet until we get to aus however we are planning to share a container, but I am a bit worried how this shipping stuff all works.

we are going to rent for 6 months or so when we get there so what do i do with all my stuff ?
are the rental houses usually unfurnished?

There were a few big purchases we had to make (fridge freezer/ bed (+ bedding) / patio table chairs (did temp as our dining rm)/ plus lot of little bits). Is was bad enough making decisions about these. First of all finding out what stores sell the items (in UK that knowledge would come naturally), finding your way there, finding out what a good price is and haggling to get it, and it is amazing how much time this all takes.

We could have purchased the fridge freezer at the 1st place we saw, but if we had paid the tag price that would have been nearly $800 more than what we eventually paid.

When I looked at the contents of our container being unloaded I was glad we did not have to go round replacing all that stuff, forget the cost just the hassle. I was even glad of some v old set of drawers that the container had room for.

v unlikely to get furnished rentals. The place we had when we arrived was a 1 bedrm unit that was furnished and was short term rental ie by the week. This cost more per wk than the 4bed house we are renting - ok location of unit was in more expensive area & inc bills, but there was the premium for it being short term & furnished.

100% agree with this. We've just bought the essentials (beds and a kitchen starter pack) and rented sofas/tv/fridgefreezer/washing machine until our stuff arrives. It cost much less to ship it all than to start afresh. :)

Agreed!

If it's decent quality and condition take the lot!

We did except kitchen electrics as they was all built in and sold with the house, but most rentals will have a cooker & dishwasher as standard.

We bought a fridge / freezer straight way, and thankfully borrowed some beds till we replaced them.

Oh and bring some fruit and veg too as it cost a fortune over here! ... :D

Mate, for some reason we ditched a decent stainless steel kitchen bin (one of those tall ones), why????? Can we find one here, can we bollox! We must have been having a funny 5 minutes when the packers came.

LOL, you know we too ditched the bin as after all, how hard will it be to get a decent bin!

Just read this thread in time.........decided to bin our bin last night, thinking there would be hundreds of stainless steel bins when we get over there!! We will now bring our bin!!

BRING THE LOT!! It aint cheap over here and like others have said, finding similar stuff can be a nightmare. They dont have the variety over here that you have in the UK.

Also...we binned the iron and kettle as we felt we didn't have enough room in the suitcases, as it turned out we could have got away with it.

As you use these items right up to the last minute my plan was to pack the kettle and go to Argos get another then the day before we left return it to Argos and tell them it was knackered and get a refund.
I didn't do it in the end as we didn't pack the kettle. :rolleyes:

It's just after not bringing them over you tend to begrudge paying for half decent ones when you could have quite easily bought your own. :mad:

That's definately the end of the "things we forgot to bring" posts! I think....
