Re: private health insurance on 457 visa
On a 457 visa you may be entitled to recipricol emergency health care under the medicare (public health) system. Depends on your country of origin.
From medicare website:
Overseas visitors on temporary visas are not eligible for Medicare benefits unless they are from a country with which Australia has a 'Reciprocal Health Care Agreement'. Currently, Australia has agreements with United Kingdom, Malta, Finland, Sweden, Italy, New Zealand, the Netherlands and Ireland. If you are visiting Australia from these countries, you are generally covered for emergency treatment only in a public hospital. If you are unsure of your Medicare eligibility status, you should check with your local Medicare office, which is listed in your local telephone book.
A number of private health funds provide health cover for overseas visitors. Some have special tables of benefits for overseas visitors and others provide similar coverage under hospital tables available to Australian residents. Benefits available, membership costs and eligibility can vary between funds.
To download a concise table of funds offering overseas visitors cover please visit:
http://www.health.gov.au/internet/wc...sumers-ovc.htm
If you are entitled to a Visitor's Medicare Card, also called a Reciprocal Medicare Card, then you are required to pay the 1.5% Medicare Levy with your tax. You will also be subject to the Medicare Levy Surcharge(MLS) of an extra 1% of your taxable income. Purchasing overseas visitors health cover does not necessarily exempt you from paying the MLS.

We are also on a 457 and have got a Reciprocal Medicare card. However, whilst this covers you for quite a lot it doesn't cover everything. We also have private health insurance with Medibank Private and because we are not PR or a citizen we have to take out Visitors cover. We have the Optimal cover and this costs us $462.60 a month

We got insurance with MBF Overseas Visitor cover fir the whole family for around $360/month. No frills or extras!
Employer paid it.
Also, we did not have to pay the Medicare 1.5% tax

Original post: Purchasing overseas visitors health cover does not necessarily exempt you from paying the MLS.
Note the word necessarily
