Smile Private Health Insurance

Hi All,

Does anyone have any information / comments upon the likely costs for private health insurance, it seems like it is a must have.

We have tried the internet but my searches provide useless information.

We have also heard a little about lifetime health cover.

Does this type of insurance also cover dental?

We are a family of three (dad 33, mum 35, daughter 3), hoping to make the move to the Perth area in 2006.

We have no experience of private health care just the "good old" UK NHS.

thanks

Heres a bit of info on the subject

A report on Channel Nine's A Current Affair quoted the following on April 12, 2005:

Health Insurance Ombudsman John Powlay has put Australia's 40 registered health funds under the microscope and says there are other issues to consider beyond cost.

One is service performance and how quickly a fund pays up.

The best performers are: HBF (Western Australia); HCF; GMHBA.
The worst: Australian Health Management; Grand United; Manchester Unity.

John also looked at who is best at paying out-of-pocket expenses.

The best: Australian Unity; HCF; HBF.
The worst: Westfund; Grand United; Healthguard.

A good page to look at when considering different insurers:

A company that compares different insurers for you to see which one may be best:

No charge to the user, as they no doubt get commission from the insurer.

Some figures of those with Private Health Insurance, from http://www.tai.org.au/Publications_F...y%20income.pdf

You can get quotes online from (for example ) www.hfc.com.au ( ABC has a link on his site to Health Co's (even tho he doesnt use them )

Some of the questions they ask you when doing the online qquote are a bit obscure unless you are here

Basically - family of 4 ranges between 100$ to 250$ pcm for basic care ( private hospital when things are needed like referrals @ 100$pcm) all the way to dental, maternity, optical, etc in the 250$ pcm.

If you earn over a certain amount (I think 101,K$ ) you get a(nother) tax if you dont have private health cover of 1.5% I think and if you do get health cover the govt reduces the premium by 30% which Ive inlcuded in the quotes above.

dont worry about it until you get here - and then stick it on your list of thing sto do. You may be able to get it from your work, or salary sacrifice and pay it out of your pre-tax income inwhich case the numbers above get reduced by XX% but then attracts fringe benefit tax... the whole thing is a cmplicated exercise unless you are really motivated ( ie here ! ) not something id attempt to wokr out from UK - but for budgeting if you want to then 150$ should see you right.
