Default Private Health Care ???

We have the opportunity through my husbands work to get private health care, however we have to organize and chose who and how much etc…

In the UK if you wanted private health care everyone knows you go to BUPA or PPP (please don’t slate me if you disagree with this). So who in Australia is the equivalent? And what is the normal price and coverage, what should we be aware of?

Big thanks the whole thing is such a minefield.

Cheers

I'm pretty new to this but thought I'd try and help.

Main ones seem to be HBF, MediBank and HBA - I'm sure there are others though. As a family of four we pay $200 per month for top cover, which means no excess if any of us is hospitalised. You can pay less per month but your excess will be higher.

We were members of BUPA UK, then BUPA Interrnational, who are owned by HBA. Perhaps that's why, although I did get another quote from HBF and they were similar. We were told the Premiums would be the same but that we don't have the same waiting times that would normally apply. They are halved.

Strange!

Maybe I pay more cos I am not a fully fledged PR yet, AH who knows never mind

Yeah I keep meaning to remind people of that, When I 1st looked into Med insurance if you were with a recognised medical insurance company in the UK (Bupa and PPP being on the list with HBF) then as long as you join within a certain time of cancelling the Uk policy which I think was 3 months then your waiting periods get waived.

Hi All,

Thanks so much for your replies so far, all very helpful.

How long is the normal waiting period? I assume this means a time from when you start the policy to when you can claim for anything. I know you have to be on it for a year before claiming pregnancy costs, but what about other things?

Thanks
Janine
