Default The price of beer!

I like a few beers in the evening and i've made about 6 visits now to different off licences and the price to me is phenomenal.

A 6 pack of 375ml tooheys is $14.50 is, roughly at the current rate thats £6.17!

God I miss my 4 pack Carling 500ml cans at £2.50!

Considering australia earnings are meant to be less then the UK i expected booze to be less.

Go to your local Dan Murphy's store www.danmurphys.com.au and checkout the prices there.

4 litre casks of wine (Stanleys Chardonney or such like) sell for $9.95. Thats $2.50 a litre or about 1 quid a litre, and I don't care what anyone else says, I think its quite drinkable cos I'm not a wine snob.

Obviously when we had guests around I would.... pour it into more expensive looking bottles

You can't convert.

It's meaningless.

A lot of people will earn more in dollars than they do in pounds. So it follows that the unit price of many things would be higher than they would inthe UK.

Look at it from there - my 85k is almost 3 times my UK salary yet many things in unit terms are only 1.5 to twice as expensive.

Look at how many hours you would need to buy something and then you might get a true comparison.

The Economist has a 'Big Mac' conversion rate which seems more honest. Basically tells you how much a big mac costs in each country and then you can use that as a comparison to see which other things are cheaper or more expensive in that particular country.

The Big Mac Index

It is a win some, lose some type thing for sure. Tonight I am drinking a rather nice Sauv for $8.95 and had pizza (OH out on the razz) for $5.95. $16 night in, rather than a £20 night in if in UK.

Yeah drinks - wine (bottled wine) and beer is more expensive to buy in bottle shops - mainly due to tax. It's very odd that you can buy Oz/NZ wine cheaper in Tesco in Cleveland than you can anywhere in Oz.

But there's an upside - generally buying drinks in pubs is much, much cheaper. And we're pretty central Sydney. Had a couple of beers at lunch time today with my boss (!) - $7.20 for 2 schooners. That's about £1.50 each drink...
