Hi Laura sorry to hear about your difficulties, but if it is of any help you are not alone. I've been working now since July and I am still struggling with the differences in nursing over here. I have even considered a change of career. It has had an impact on how I have settled, but it is still early days and I guess we need to hang in there and hope things improve. Neil has settled into is job great.... is that a man thing? Hope everything else is good with you and yours. Take care

Oh how is the dog doing? Indie has settled in fine although struggling with the heat abit. x

Hi Donna

Good to hear from you!! I reckon it must be a man thing. Having said that Gordon has moved jobs a couple of times too....it's just not too good that way. I'm sorry you are feeling the same as me. It kinda puts a damper on everything a wee bit!

Dog is fine - doing a fair bit of scratching with the heat (dont worry - it's not fleas - it's hayfever of all things). Oh and yes, he has a sore bum also. Are you still renting or have you bought somewhere yet?

Ha ha - speak soon.

Laura

"Yes, I served 8 years in the army."
"Good, that counts in your favour. Do you have any disabilities?"

"I am 80% disabled. A mortar round blew off my testicles so they declared me disabled. It doesn't affect my ability to work.

"Sorry to hear about the damage, but I have good news for you. I can hire you immediately. Our working hours are 8.00 to 4.00. Come in about 10 tomorrow, and we'll get you started."

"This is a government department. We don't do anything but sit around and scratch our balls for the first two hours. No point you coming in for that."

soooo funny!!

Hope you find a job soon that matches your skills. What nursing position did you hold in the UK? Sos for being nosey just interested as a fellow professional. Is nursing that different in OZ?

yes I too am finding nursing very different here. After 21 years and working as a senior nurse in the nhs ,I am now back to first year staff nurse pay as a casual so thats without holiday or sick pay
I now have no autonomy and find it all very frustrating.all task orientated

Re: Pressures of working in Perth.....

Two angles (one serious one not):

When I first came over it took a while to adjust to almost an hours commute door to door each way after 20 minutes in the UK, a standard 40 hour week rather than 37 (and 40 tends to become 45) and I had one job where the w@nker I worked for took pleasure in pulling deadlines forward whenever I said I could not meet them, slagging me off behind my back and not providing me with staff he promised etc. So I walked out and moved back to my old firm which is much friendlier, got myself a shiny new ipod for on the train so treat it is a chill out time and generally accept that you should work at a more relaxed pace to fit in. This solved those problems.

The "pressure" I do have is that my site trip for Thursday / Friday has been cancelled/ I now have to choose what to do on Friday night between two different leaving drinks, catching up with an old friend / colleague who is asking for me or going out with the missus. The stress of deciding! This is not an uncommon situation.

Re: Pressures of working in Perth.....

Hiya guys,
We too are both struggling with the work situation in Perth....My OH is an accountant with over 25 years experience in the UK.......He is working but it is in a specialist area and he wants to get back to the 'routine' accountancy area eg. tax returns, accounts etc.....anyway when he goes for interviews they remark that he has no tax experience!!! He is doing a course in taxation and is flying through it as there is little difference between Aus and the UK in this area!! No figure......
I'm a nurse (health visitor in the UK) but also ITU experience.....anyway, applyed for a job in child health nursing (aus equavalent to hv) and had interview last week........I'll be lucky to hear anything for another couple of weeks and might.........i mean might.......start work in the New Year....they are that slow!! Also worried about deskilling as the CHN responsibilities are so limited compared to the UK..
Also discovered set working hours and actual hours worked can be significantly different too!!OH works about 45 - 50 hours a week with no overtime!!
These are just our experiences and don't seem all that different to some of you.....hopefully they are only initial and things will sort themselves out eventually........there's loads to be said for being self employed however!!
Pam x
