Pre-schools in NSW - Do you have to pay?
Hi,
We are moving over next month and our little girl will be four years old in July. We will be taking her out of nursery school here so would like to keep her in education over in Australia. From what I understand she will start kindergarten next January (as she will be five years old before July 31st) but could we send her to pre-school until then for free or would be have to pay?
We will be on PR visas so I understand we will qualify for free education at a public school.
Any advise would be appreciated.
Cheers
Sally

There are very few free preschools in NSW so yes, expect to pay if you can find a place in one.
She will just squeak into the eligibility for school next year but will be one of the youngest and you will find many parents keeping their kids out of full time school for an extra year to give them that bit of maturity so you may want to consider an extra year before school as well.
http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/gotosc...schoollist.php lists the free ones - only 100 across the whole state and generally in "needier" areas

You can use any of the private pre schools and pay.
Your actual costs will depend on your income, and how much Child Care Benefit you are entitled to.
For your info, our daughter started Kindergarten in NSW, at age 4yrs and 8 months. This was a few years ago though.

Well she will be able to start school but you will find that many schools will have kids that are a LOT older then her if she starts in January when not five til July. Mine will be amongst the youngest and she will be 5 when she starts (January Birthday) Kindergarten next year. Many kids will be nearing 6 when she starts in her class so if you are ok with her and a bunch of nearly 6 year olds go for it, but depends on her really, if she can cope emotionally....
Preschool will advise you of her readiness, but honestly you won't find many free preschools. Most kids aged 4 go 3 days a week at aged 4 and this if a KU (community preschool) is around 44 dollars a day, and they go up to around 70 for Monte or Steiner or Independent ones (more for daycare). The day is usually 9-3 as well. They can be hard to get a place at as well but priority is given to 4 year olds if there is a space.
HTH..
