Default pre-existing medical conditions

Hi all, I moved here just over 3 months ago, I have UC (ulcerative colitis) and am trying to sort out my medical care here.

The medication I need is non PBS because it is a pre existing condition. The company I am sponsered by are trying to find me a health insurance that will cover medical expenses (medicine, specialist etcc..) but the ones we have found have a caps on the non PBS medication.

Can anyone give me advice, or info?

thanks
elaine.

Whether the medicine is on the PBS is related to whether the government put it on the PBS or not - nothing to do with pre-existing conditions.

A lot of medical insurance companies will not pay out for anything to do with a pre-existing condition for a 'waiting period' commonly 12 months.

Non-PBS medications are usually capped because they are usually expensive!

My insurance has a 12 month waiting period and a $700 cap on non-PBS items.

I think you may have to pay for a 12 months. Maybe you can come to some arrangement with your sponsor to chip in.

Best of luck.

the medication itself is actually approved on the PBS, but my prescription is non-PBS for the existing condition

Yeah there doesn't seem to be to much I can do. Maybe offset it with something else, now seeing if I can get some sort of medication benefit on the LAFHA

fingers crossed!

I'm an Australian with UC. I was prescribed Salazopyrin (Sulfasalazine) which is definitely on the PBS (see the link here).

If your medication isn't on the PBS, I suggest you ask for a change of prescription.
