PR & RRV with a TEMP 457
G'day folks,
I've been in Oz for 2.5 years as a temp 457 resident.
I'm thinking of going home for a while for family reasons and to earn some sterling. I haven't got PR yet, but was asked to get my medicals sorted the other day (I applied in Oz last April). Quite pricey for the medicals I thought, $245 for an adult and $150 for a child, in Sydney.
Anyway, if/when we get granted PR, we have to leave the country in order to get the PR visa validated ie. it gets validated when we come back in to Oz.
We can't use this (forced) trip to go back to the UK as we would have to be back within the year to validate the PR visa ie. you only get a year to validate your PR visa from the date it was granted and we want to go back to the UK for 3/4 years.
So, we'll have to go to NZ (is this the cheapest option ?), back to Oz (to validate the visa) and then go home. Very expensive & confusing.
Does anyone know, since I have already been in Oz for 2.5 years, would this in anyway go towards getting a Return Resident Visa, if we didn't do the necessary 2 years out of 5 in order to get the PR visa re-granted ?
Cheers,
Dave

Actually, the countdown begins with your police or medical checks, not at the date of grant of your visa. This means you will normally have less than 12 months from the date your visa is granted to enter Australia as a PR.

Time spent on a non-permanent visa (yours would be one) is ignored for citizenship or RRV purposes. Only time spent on a permanent visa can be counted. Even a temporary spouse visa's 2-year duration is dismissed for citizenship and RRV applications.
