Surface mail is cheaper than airmail but does take a lot longer.

Yeah, just go into the post office and ask for surface mail; takes around 3 months by ship usually but its cheaper.

There was that mail re-direction theory, not sure how feasible it would be to set it up from Oz. If you could get your mail redirected internationally, which you would pay for, then all items of mail would only need UK postage and they would be forwarded to you in Oz. Might be worth looking in to - do a search for it on here, there were a couple of threads recently.

I think that's the only one you can use :(...it is expensive isn't it? I get sent 'Lancashire Tea', not much weight but it's also the size. It costs my friends over 5 pounds to send a packet but happily 'Lancashire Tea' now has a web site and my brother in Adelaide has ordered 6 boxes of 80 tea bags...and the postage is only $2.50 ;)
I have just sent my grand daughter a nice watch for her birthday, it has a 'sparkly' blue strap and she'll love it. I can honestly say that there was hardly any weight in it but it cost nearly $11 to send it

Think you'd have to set it up before you leave as you have to redirect mail from your current UK address.

yes, no doubt that would be easiest.

What if you had a redirection which lapsed, would they let you re-activate it to a new address?

Or failing that, get someone you know and trust to set up a redirection using their name? Although not sure how you would get only what you wanted and not all their mail too, which they might feasibly prefer to receive themselves....

Ah well it was just a thought!

Its not so much the weight you are paying for , i don't think that $11 is expensive , your sending an item half way round the world & paying several postal services for a service & also customs clearence .

Someone like Lancashire Tea will have nagotiated set pricing of their items & possably ship/air when they have enough orders , i.e every 3 days or maybe 2 depends .

This is true , if your mail is on International Re-direction you will recieve any package sent at UK rate ......... However , as most ppl know 95% of mail is " junk" so you are infact paying a premium to mostly recieve " crap" just so you recieve maybe 3-4 parcels ?

It wouldn't work anyway - Royal Mail won't redirect parcels abroad, as no customs declaration will have been completed.

International Mail - Any item bigger than Letter format over 25mm thickness & over 100g that clearly contains goods cannot be redirected abroad.
This is because:

Items containing goods sent to non-EU destinations require a CN22 or CN23 customs declaration. These must be completed and signed by the sender at the time of posting and therefore cannot be completed by Royal Mail as part of the redirection process
All countries either in the EU or outside of the EU have specific lists of prohibitions and restrictions detailing what can and cannot be sent to those countries. Royal Mail cannot therefore redirect packages abroad as the contents will be unknown and may transgress the prohibitions and restrictions in the destination country
International maximum size restrictions are 40% smaller than those allowable in Royal Mail's domestic services. Therefore it is the case that a proportion of packages will be too large to be sent abroad.

Re: posting parcels from uk to Oz ???

I'm sure there was someone on here who had received redirected parcels like this. I know you'd have to prove ID, which is why I wondered if they would reactivate a previous redirection rather than set up a new one.
And whilst you would get a load of junk mail, it wouldn't cost you any more coz it's not like they charge you per item, it's just a flat fee. Theoretically you could make it back on one parcel if it was big enough!
