I'm employed in the brewing industry, so clearly biased, but on the other hand I know a few of the brewers and breweries on which I base my recommendations:

Us industry types hate the term "real ale". What's all the other stuff we brew: imaginary?! Please use the term "cask conditioned ale" in future. I thank you.

You like Corona, but then go on to talk about other "cooking lagers"! You know there's a reason they put a lime in the top?! Still, the customer is always right and there is no accounting for taste!

Now: you're in Perth and like ales, so Little Creatures Pale Ale and other flavoursome Little Creatures brews are a must.

Please don't fall for the "imported is best" propaganda. Beer is best when fresh. Locally brewed Stella, Becks and Heineken are better unless you prefer beer that has been heated in a shipping container and therefore tends to be stale. Heineken is my personal favourite (brewed in Sydney). Becks a close second.

VB is awful. Also has to come a long way to get to Perth. The other (big) local brewery is Swan. They make Tooheys Extra Dry so again fresh, and a great beer for the hot weather, also very good for price as only a bit more expensive than your "cooking lagers".

Finally: James Squire. The lovechild of possibly the most iconic microbrewer in Australia: Chuck Hahn. Still brewed in a lovely microbrewrey in Camperdown, Sydney. The IPA is great (although I wish they would tone down the bitterness a bit), and my favourite is Golden Ale, which is more like a British Summer Ale. Whilst on about Chuck, if you like hops then try Hahn Premium.

Finally, I agree that Murphy's is better than Guinness and you can get it in (most) Dan Murphy's.

Happy Drinking!!

Aye, I like the Golden Ale too.

"The Campaign For Cask Conditioned Ale" doesn't have the same ring about it but good luck trying! ;)

It's normally Australia that cops it in the beer criticism stakes and comes out the loser but there is good beer here.

British beer - I never thought I'd say this but I have also gone off my bitter since arriving down under. I can't stomach it now. A 15 year habit broken..

The Germans, Czechs, Belgians, Dutch know how to do it. Brits have not got a clue.

Fair point.

British beer still sucks the big one though.

I'd kill for a pint of Jennings right now. The best pint I have ever had was at the little 'pub' at their brewery.

The Germans, Dutch and Czechs all brew beer which is unimaginatively convergent on a single taste. Probably why they have mass market appeal.

The Belgians have more leeway (or imagination) and produce many decent brews although they can take it a bit overboard with some of the flavourings.

If, like me, you like fairly strong but drinkable lager or pilsener type beers then German and Czech is the way to go. Dutch are responsible for Heineken so I take your point.

Agree about the Belgians to a degree - a lot of their beers are an aquired taste, but I love their Duvel, Lucifer, Kwak etc.

I used to drink a lot of Kwak (although not in one night). And not just for novelty glass :D

Duvel & Lucifer are akin to Cask ales like Theakston's Old Peculiar Bateman's Salem or Adnam's Broadside. Any mass produced swilling beer is crap in comparison whether it's Dutch, German British or Australian. It's hardly comparing like for like;)
My current favourites are Little Creatures Pale Ale, Fat Yak Pale Ale & a rather nice New Zealand Pear Cider by Monteith, very refreshing as a sundowner after work:thumbup:

At the Fed Sq microbrewery showcase they had a drink that was very similar to a Duvel. Unfortunately I can't remember which brewery it came from .

Maybe next year I'll take notes. :D
