Also in IT ! You need to be where you are thinking of emigrating to, to actually sell yourself in the IT market. They want to hear it from you, what you can programme, platforms, languages and all that.
It ain't like nursing.

Hi Paul & Lisa, i am a pump enginneer still in UK but hoping to get to Aus in 6-7 months, what i done was went to the Brisbane yellow pages found all the pump engineers then searched for them on the net.
I then contacted them by e mail, and of the 10 i sent i got 8 replys that said contact them asa soon as i arrived!!
One of them has even gone as far as doing character refernec checks on me with their sister company in the UK, So while it is hard to actually secure a job, it is worthwhile doing some legwork before you go!! at least you feel as if you are doing something constructive!!

My husband is a printer and he registered with seek a job agency, we get e-mails with quite a few job vacancies per day. He has been e-mailing them asking for advice etc.
Just from doing ths a company have agreed to sponsor us and takee us over there in the next 3-4 months! So it's worth just e-mailing everyone and remember if you on't ask you don't get!
Good Luck

Idealy, I would like to have 1 or 2 interviews lined up before we go, and start work 4 to 6 weeks after we get there. Of course it wouldn't kill me if it took me 6 months to find a job, provided the wife gets a job quickly!
I've always fancied the house husband role anyway

I agree with all of the above; companies won't touch you with a bargepole until you're actually in the country with the visa in your hand, but it is definitely worth doing your homework and sending out lots of CVs to recruitment agents in advance, then following up and telling them when you're going to be there, as then they can try to line up interviews for not long after you've arrived.
Bear in mind that Aussie CVs are a very different beast from UK ones. They need to be a lot more trumpet-blowing. Modesty and British reticence about your achievements won't get you very far!
Good luck!

Michael Page have recently opened their Australian branches and may be worth a go http://www.michaelpage.com.au
The good thing about this company is that they specialise in only about 6 areas (inc technology) so they might be worth a try. If you go to http://www.michaelpage.co.uk/control...ectionid=10128 and right down the bottom of the page there is a link to send your CV in, as a UK resident interested in working in Australia.
www.seek.com.au is also good, as there is a facility on here to upload your CV and then leave it open for employers to view (I got a job offer this way when I was out there last year). You can also see how many people have viewed your details

It is possible but from what I understand, most people wait until they get here. My hubby was offered a job before we arrived - he had telephone intereviews. Guess we got lucky. He is in IT.

I don't want to walk straight into a job. Its been a few years since I've bummed around for months looking for work. I was looking forward to spending days by the pool filling in application forms .
Ok, time to dumb down the CV

My husbands a printer and he got in touch with several companies from the uk and lined up interviews for our first couple of weeks, turned out that he was offered 3 jobs in the first week. They do seem to be very short of printers here though, the terms are more favourable than uk which is not the case in most jobs.
As a nurse I didnt anticipate any problems, I guess we're lucky both working in in demand jobs.

Best advice I can give is put out your feelers before you go.
It does seem unlikely you'll get a job before you arrive, not like in the good old days.
I had an Oz company phone me in the UK and interview me for a job back in late 90s. This time round they wouldn't even acknowledge receipt of my resume!
I'm in IT btw.
If you can then 'network'.
