Porter Davis again......
We asked for an upgrade to our toilet from a plastic to a china cistern, they told us $266.
So I just phoned up their suppliers, who said I could buy the whole china toilet for less than that, and the cistern for $140 now considering this is an upgrade so you'd take the price of the other one off, I'd say they were charging me in excess of 300% profit on it.
I phoned up to price a shower valve, they said $149 I now have to give the part number to PD, can't wait to see how much they're going to charge for it.

I like the way they say risk tile damage its probably just a ring of silicon round the back !
Prob still cheaper than getting a plumber in at a latter date .

The only way any builder can churn out mass houses on display home margins is to keep every cost and second of time to an absolute budget. Like shopping at Mcdonalds. Time is money, product choice is limited.
Most of these outfits are buying one model of toilet from the importer in taiwan and they buy them by the thousand. Now if they have 200 houses on the go and each and every client wants to change the bog, it becomes a nightmare, imagine then every client wants to channge just 10 things, it affects purchasing, ordering , delivery, pricing, and takes staff and paperwork to do it, all costs and lost time, many items in oz that are not standard take months to come in, client wants house in 16 weeks it can take longer than that to get some stuff. Plus if they charged say $10 extra every client would make hundreds of changed and they way they keep the prices to bare bones minimum would not be possible.
If you build with a small private builder who specialises in one off homes, bending over backwards and ordering in a european toilet costing $3,700 should be no problem at all, madam would like a european bidet yes we will make sure the tradesmen dont piss in it no problem at all mam But they are paying big bux for the extra time and service.

It's the same supplier, and all I'm talking about is swapping a plastic cistern for a china one.
They weren't doing anything, they gave me the number of their supplier and told me to phone them, find out what I wanted and tell them and they'd just request that one instead and charge me 300% profit on it.
Plus they told me I could buy the same whole toilet for less than the upgrade.
