hi thanks for the reply, but no we cant, the window is the french doors out to the balcony.

It sucks really, since the place we are renting has evap cooling on the ceiling, but as soon as its turned on its like a massive wind turbine in your house, it might take some of the heat off but you cant watch tv, make a phone call or speak to each other. Am wondering if this house was used to torture people with white noise, cos thats what it is like.

We have complained to the letting agent who sent one of their own electricians around who didnt even look at it he just said its crap and he doesnt know about air con. We were then told that he reported that it was fine. We have asked if the letting agent will contact the landlord to ask if we could come to an arrangement to have a split system put in, even if we pay for the unit. We think the agent hasnt bothered to contact them.

Options are either portable aircon, or go to VCAT and try that way. The place was advertised with aircon, and currently it isnt useable. But we dont want to pish off the letting agents because the market is so bad right now it could be a nightmare. We could move but this is an awsome place in walking distance to the city centre.

Any ideas would be great.

cheers

How about removing a pane of glass(assuming there are seperate panels) from the door and custom making a panel in which to insert the exhaust securely?....and of course fixing it up before you vacate the premises and the final inspection is done

You will only get a 3 to 5 degree drop in room temperature using a mobile air conditioner, assuming the part you put out the window only exhausts.

The reason for the small decrease is that air from the room is drawn over the condensor heat exchanger and then, heated, is exhausted outside the room. All very well except that air must be drawn into the room to replace that exhausted. All very well again but where does this replacement air come from? Outside - where the air is hot.

The whistling and hissing in your evaporative cooling system may be caused by faults simple to fix, such as vents. Ask an evaporative cooling technician if it can be improved at low cost.

I don't like evaporative cooling except for very dry climates during the cooler hours of night. During the warmer parts of the day, evaporative cooling draws in hot outside air, humidifies it producing a relatively small cooling effect. Some houses are better cooled by opening at night and closing during the day.

The worst thing about heat is lolling about complaining about it. Makes it much more unbearable. Best to get up early and get an hour's exercise before it gets too hot. Gets rid of excess water in the body and is the quickest way to a-climatize.

thanks for the reply, but I work shift work so sometimes have to sleep during the day when I work nights which can be upto 8 nights in a row and i dont have much of a choice.

The portable aircon we were looking at is a delonghi that is a split system, it has the condenser ?? that sits outside which is connected to the inside bit by a tube, I think its supposed to be better than the one you describe.

As for the whistling of the evap cooler, well its not whistling its like standing next to a jet engine on a aeroflot 747, lots of noise and not much action.

A split system will, potentially, give much better performance than a single hose exhausted system or even a dual hose system which uses one hose to draw outside air in over the condensor heat exchange and the other hose to conduct the heated air back outside.

Perhaps you should give a link to a description of the model you have. It is like this one:
http://www.delonghi.com.au/products/...del=PACS1200HP

The split system hoses are relatively small. Your landlord may allow you to drill through a wall to pass the hoses through, presumably on the condition that you cover or fill the hole when vacating.

I still say you should ask a technician to check the evaporative system; they do not need to create lots of noise to work near their optimum.

Missed the implication that you do not yet have a device. In which case I would contemplate buying a cheaper wall mounted split system and having it installed. The cheap systems tend not to be as efficient or quiet but rather merely adequate. The greatest expense, due to high cost of labour, is having them installed. They can be removed but need to be re-gassed when re-installed.

hey thanks for the reply, we might give the landlord option another go, we need to report some damage to the house made by the neighbours building work, hopefully the owners father will visit and we can ask him about the aircon then.

The de longhi aircon unit is the one in the link, it looks like a good option but might be hard to find since it has been discontinued.

gotta hurry cos its going to be warm soon eh. Thanks for the advice.

Can Evaporative Cooling really be classed as Aircon? I would check that out. If it was advertised as having aircon, then aircon should be provided for you. Do you have proof it was advertised with aircon?

Good luck! And inthe mean time, get a good fan!!!!!

Hey thanks for the reply, we do still have the print out of the listing that shows that the place is supposed to have air con. it was also one of the main reasons for moving.

We will try to go through the letting agent/landlords again, cos i am dreading summer without decent aircon, we have 3 fans, ceiling fans and a portable aircon unit but none of the rooms can be sealed off for the portable aircon to work.

Default Rental Advice, Aircon listed but dodgy evap cooling instead

Hi everyone, just looking for some advice before we pish off our landlords and get black listed.

We moved into our rental 16 months ago, the property was listed with air con, when we viewed the property we didnt try it since it was winter, but saw the vents on the ceiling and the controls on the wall. We are not aircon specialists.

When we tried it in the winter it turned on and made some sound and cooler air came out. But as soon as summer comes it doesnt drop the temp at all and on the full setting, which is the only one that sends out some air it is a little like turning on a massive wind turbine minus the wind but loads of the sound.

Its so noisy that watching TV, having a conversation is impossible, you have to shout. We asked the letting agent to have an engineer to check it out, he sent out the agents own repair guy who agreed it was crap and too noisy but said he didnt know much about aircon. Then 2 days later the agent replied saying that the repair guy said it was fine and it was working how an evap cooling unit should work.

So now we are coming into another summer of high heat we are wondering about what to do. We dont want to pish off the landlords too much by going in too heavy because we have heard of people being blacklisted. We would prefer not to move because its a nice place otherwise.

We are going to send a letter to both the landlord and letting agent since we dont believe the agent is passing on requests to the landlord. We also have proof that the place was listed with air con.

We are paying 490 per week in Collingwood Melbourne for a 2 bed unit with courtyard and balconies.

None of the rooms can be effectively sealed off to work with the portable aircon we bought with us from our old rental.

Roll on perm residency and getting a mortgage so we can sort these things out for ourselves.

Have added your new thread to your other one. The original one is still fairly high up, so no need to redo it.

hi thanks moneypenny, but it was a different thread.

One was asking about advice on aircon fitting for french doors which led me onto any thoughts on what to do about our current rental and the aircon problem.

no worries.
