Pools - Worth the hassle or not?

Re: Pools - Worth the hassle or not?
The wind is the main factor for evaporation - see how quickly your cupp cools if held outside in a breeze!
Our pool in the States would have to be topped up by hundreds of gallons two or three times a week - no leaks - in warm and windy weather. With a blanket on just at night, evaporation went down to a few dozen gallons a week.

An evaporation map of Australia. As an example, Perth area is in a band that's around 1900mm annually; much of that will be concentrated in the summer of course.

Thank you so much for all your comments on the pros and cons of owning a pool.
I think the arguments for outweigh those against. I think it is summarized nicely by your comments:
If you want to "live the Pommie dream" a pool is compulsory.
I was not aware that pools were so expensive between costs for fencing and the pool itself. Time to relook at the finances I think. The butlers living quarters will have to go ! Thanks everybody for all your comments.

cheep to run and about 1 hour a week to keep clean.
average temp in summer 28c with no heating.
and if you do things right you do not have to have a pool fence.

I have another question about pool covers.....how do you put them on? I presume that as you have to use them daily that they are on some kind of roll mechanism?
Another stupid question. But this really is a new one to me...and I thought I had heard it all !
