Default pool maintenance and renting?

If you have a house with a pool, and you rent, is it maintained by the landlord, or the tenant, who does all the chemically bits? And how much does it cost if you (the tenant does it)..what is there to consider?

Depends on the lease - check the terms very carefully before you sign, and if there's any ambiguity get it sorted on writing.

We have to maintain our pool which is a bit of a cheek bearing in mind the rent we're paying, but actually doing it is not that big a deal. Make sure that there is a decent, working "crawler" (or whatever the technical term is for the motorised thing that works it's way around the bottom hoovering stuff up) and make sure you are given a demonstration to show you exactly what to do with the chemicals (most landlords will at least offer this as it's not in their interest for you to stuff the pool). Any pool shop will happily analyse any water sample you bring in if there's a problem and tell you how to fix it; we've found that as long as you add enough chlorine and test every 2/3 days when the pool is being used and every couple of weeks otherwise it's nice and clear. I've never worked out the chemical costs but it's not much.
