POMS IN PERTH

Just a quick post in defence of Poms in Perth as there are several negative and rather rude posts about them on this forum. I am in the process of getting my permanent residence visa and would like to thank all those using and maintaining Poms in Perth for the terrific job they are doing for all us wannabee ozzies.

They are providing a valuable link for all those making the move to Perth and I think that is great. It is a very daunting time, giving up everything to move your family to the other side of the world and making a few contacts before you go, getting valuable answers to confusing issues and sharing opinions and ideas (much as you do on this site-I may add) helps a great deal to remove some of the worries and when we are on the other side if we meet a few of these people to socialise with to start us off remodelling our lives and to offer a helping hand, what's wrong with that?????

They are not 'clicky' at all and I dont think they 'stick out' (except for the car but that's just advertising-surely you can see that!). I met up with them last year on a 'recky' trip to Perth and attended the very first social gathering, and I have NEVER met such a great group of people in my life! I am truely grateful to them for sharing their experiences with me and offering us support and reassurance.

So please dont knock them, they are great!

The main feedback I feel from this site is that Poms in Perth services are overpriced.

Yes, exactly. And nobody can say they aren't, because there are defintely enough cheaper options.

The website though, can be helpful, and the forum is good for Perth people too.

ditto - check the other Perth rentals and you'll be suprised at the price difference. They also seem to be very pound driven with their various services etc.

Ok i am in the last stages of setting up a meet and greet business here in Perth. Now i always thought Poms in Perth were overpriced as well, but as im finding now looking around for accommodation to put people into when they first get here, poms in perth are on par with these. Now i havent used Poms in Perth so i do not know what service they give. But if you want short term accommodation for upto 3months or less or it can be more, you dont have to put a bond or deposit down. Now if you go into another type of rental you probably are looking at 6 months - 12 months let with a bond and a deposit. I have been to look at so many places and they are all at the moment coming out at around the same prices. I suppose it depends what you want for your money though doesnt it, i have been to look at a 2 bed apartment in the city and it was gorgeous, but you will look at about $450 a week, then i have one to look at next week at cottsloe a 2 bed apartment smack opposite the beach for about $450 a week. So how do you think these prices compare?
Hey i should be selling myself shouldnt i, not poms in perth for gods sake.
I have a way to go, but hope i can offer a service a good service to people like us that have done the whole migration bit, and sorry but i will have to charge for it all, cant do airport runs etc for nothing, wish i could but i cant.

There you go! Poms in Perth are not overpriced, they have properties in the North region of Perth (Kingsley etc) starting from around A$475 from memory and for that you get a pool, free pick up from the airport and their expertise and advice for the duration of your stay (if not longer). I for one will be using their service and feel comforted by the fact that I will have them to call upon during the first few weeks in Perth. I have looked up a simillar service south of the river but they charged more for the same service and property is cheaper south of Perth so I think they are good value for money. If some-one else can offer alternatives offering the same quality accommodation, furnished for short term lets (including pick up and settling in services) for less money then post here!!

No, not with all those services, no. But I like organising everything myself, it's fun, and I don't have kids (yet).
My tactic would be stay first night in motel, then get rental car, go to short term let, get some shopping on the way....

I see it all as part of the adventure: filling in forms, interview in Berlin, shipping stuff, camping out...

Though, I can understand you might not want adventure when you have kids (but in that case, should you be migrating in the first place.... ;) )

Some valid points simone. except i think most of us with kids have had more adventures than alot of people, and we have the joy of being able to share it with the kids to . We like adventure as you say, but we dont like stress with kids, its not fair on children when the adults are really stressed out. We came out and stayed in a motel with 2 children, $70 a nite, for literally one room, 2 weeks we stayed there, and i would have given my right arm to have moved into something really nice. Some of the places you have named like the 1st and 2nd apartments are long term rentals, so a bond etc and lease will need to be signed, i have also been in touch with dowler apartments and the budget one looks good, but i have to say it doesnt always pay to go cheap, because you will pay in the end.
Of course its all fun, and letting someone book your accommodation and car hire doesnt take the fun out of it all surely :rolleyes: we decided to budget as people say, as we hadnt any money to spend, so no choice, and we payed for it, we had more bloomin disfunctional families staying in that motel than i god knows what:( great way to start your new life.
Also Jivebabe poms in perths, free pick up etc, is all in the price of the accommodation, dont be fooled by that one, they dont do it for nothing. Do you know how much the insurances are here to enable you to carry the public in a car, public liability etc etc, believe me they have covered themselves!!!!!

I have several contacts for privately let accommodation, as opposed to the corporate lets listed by Simone. Prices vary there, but are generally much cheaper and the quality looks good.

Thanks for the replies to my rather 'outspoken' post, I must say I was quite upset by the negative things people were saying about PIP. I just felt that unless you had met them, used their service you shouldn't ctiritise, they are only trying to earn a living the same as all of us and credit to them, they have found quite a nice niche! and NO I dont work for them (although I would like to!!)

As for the adventure being taken away from the move------NOT AT ALL! We will be having quite an adventure I can tell you, with two children (boys that fight all the time and a husband that gets prickly heat at the drop of a hat on a summers day!) We are taking on a huge challenge trying to make a go of this move but as others have said, we will be under a lot of stress and I do not want the boys to suffer, I want them to feel that they haven't 'lost' any standard of living by moving to Perth so I am trying to get a comfortable house with a pool and pool table so they can be 'occupied' while we sort the mundain things out. This way I feel we are giving ourselves the best possible chance of having a positive start to what is probably going to be the most trying time of our lives. At least I am planning ahead and have very real expectations of what our life will be like but I am not too foolish as to 'overlook' valuable inside info that can be offered by others that have gone before us and learn to avoid the 'pitfalls', this is what I hope to get from PIP, and luckily we have budgeted for it and can afford a bit of luxury when we first arrive in Oz. As for the pick up service we dont really need this as our rellies will be there to meet us in their true ozzie 'camper van!' We'll look like the clampits!! But it is a good idea if you dont know a sole or never been to perth before you migrate! Anyway as I said I apologise for being so opinionated, everyone is entitled to their own views and best of luck to everyone embarking on the this wonderful and exciting adventure!

You have both made some very good points, and I am now understanding it a bit more, and seeing it isn't that much as overpriced as I first thought.

And, as I said, I can understand that with kids it's a completly different story.

I can't believe I actually forgot this:
When my parents migrated with us kids(5 and 3) in 1987, we stayed in a 'migration centre' for the first 6 weeks.
This doesn't exist anymore, but is was very handy.
You got 1 or 2 bedrooms with ensuite, and there was a sort of 'mess hall' for dinner. OK, a bit primitive, but still... I have some pics too ;)
There was also a day care thingy for the kids...
