Pommy git gibe leaves banned bowler stumped
From The West Australian today(9/02/05)
Pommy git gibe leaves banned bowler stumped
When veteran WACA club cricketer Peter Gardiner called an opposing batsman a “Pommy git he thought it was just the usual banter between a bowler and his arch enemy.
The man standing 22 yards away, Kyle Costzer, didn’t seem too bothered by the gibe either – even of the Gosnells batsman was Irish.
So you can imagine the Joondalup player’s surprise when he was suspended for two matches for racial vilification after being reported by umpire Colin James.
Gardiner will appeal in a bid to play in the club one-day final at the WACA Ground on Sunday. The school gardener pleaded not guilty to bringing the game into disrepute but was suspended by the WACA tribunal on Monday night.
Under the WACA’s code of behaviour, players are prohibited from vilifying a person with “offensive, abusive, threatening or belittling behaviour directed at a particular characteristic of that person, regardless of whether the person is offended or not.
Joondalup president Max Goldenberg said the club would support Gardiner’s appeal, while Gosnells president Ross Leipold said his club asked the WACA to drop the charge.
