Poll: How soon did YOU find work in Oz??
Thought it would be interesting to get some stats on how long has taken fellow Expats to be wrenched away from the tinnies'n'beaches & forced into gainful employment after arriving in Oz....

Good poll, I wish you had put a bit more break up in the lower time fame tho. Its just that there is a lot of $$$ difference between getting a job within 2 weeks and 6 months. Lots are coming here with very little money so it could be more helpful.
Us, got jobs in Sydney on day 2, not what we wanted but they paid the bills. Plus it got us knowing people, vital here for getting to the next stage, better jobs, own business etc.

Arrived November 2nd, got my first job by about the 21st November, like Dotty it wasn't what I wanted but it was a job. Got a permanent one which I started Jan 5th - again its not really what I want, but its quite good, pays the bills and will do for the forseeable future.
Once you have A job, ANY job, its easier to get another.

Arrived in Melbourne on the 10th of November and started my full time position on 15th December (spoilt my Christmas holiday a bit but hey ).
I got the job on the back of an email I sent to several companies back in July. I got a response in Novemeber which said if you get to Melbourne then give us a call. I called. Went in for interview and got job. If you work in a specialist field then I think it is definitley worth doing this. I did not just send a standard 2 page CV either. I sent a nine page document that gave a lot more detail and stated at the start there was a 2 page CV as an appendix at the start.

An appendix is usually at the back or else it's perhaps a preface

I used those metrics because I work in IT in the financial sector; many people who lost their jobs in The City/Wall St after 9/11 & the Dot Com crash have had to think in terms of being out of work for a *long* time (typically anything between 6-24 months). Been a big eye-opener for a lot of people, I can tell you.
You're quite right about the importance of networking, too; I've stayed working because I was happy to pick up the phone, call people I hardly know, and sell myself (in a perfectly proper way, of course ). Made a huge difference.
Good luck with your jobs in Sydney - & I hope they lead onwards & upwards!

Got job in Feb so it was 3 months....and that inludes a time where i sat on my ass stuffed my face with turkey and got totally pissed.

I would say that December and January are NOT good times to be looking for work. So to anyone coming out here at November/December time, expect it to be a holiday time until February.
