Police checks - howto???
Hi,
I'm already an expat living in Switzerland, and have been for the last 5 years. I'm going to apply to Oz, but want to get the Police report and medical first.
- Exactly how do I go about getting a police report from the UK given that I am no longer a resident there. Can I do it from Switzerland, or do I have to visit the UK?
- I know that I have to get one from Switzerland too - can anyone point me to a webpage with how to?
- Is it possible that a minor conviction ( 12 years ago & not involving sentence!) could affect the application. What is the criteria?
Thanks

Re: Police checks - howto???
Information about police reports from the UK is at this site:
http://www.australia.org.uk/VTI/FORMS/character_req.pdf
This schedule tells you where to apply - in other words via the closest police station to where you last lived in the UK.
And it's unlikely that a previous misdemenour of the type you have described will affect your application.
I can't help regarding the Switzerland penal certificate though. Enquire via the Embassy in Berlin, or take a look at their website:
http://www.australian-embassy.de/
Hope this helps.

If you are no longer resident in UK you can apply direct to Scotland Yard (it's the same police national computer). Check out http://www.met.police.uk/dataprotect...s/dpa3019b.pdf to download the form.

I was in a similar position to you, I've been in the US for past 5 years.
For my OZ UK police report I called Scotland Yard who told me I had to contact the
data protection unit of the police force of the last place I lived in the UK. I lived
in Somerset so Avon and Somerset were the force I contacted. They sent me the
relevant form from Bristol to the US, I completed it and sent it back to Bristol with
the 10 pounds payable to Avon and Somerset police.
The report was mailed directly from Scotland Yard to me here in the US. Any
enquiries I might have had were to be directed to Bristol, not Scotland Yard.
Bristol were VERY helpful.
