Plumber to oz
I am wanting to come to Australia to work, my plan is to get a work holiday visa, and try ande extend it to two years. See how it goes with the possibility of trying to get sponsorship if i like it somewhere. I am thinking of starting in south australia. I am NVQ level 3 plumbing and ACS gas trained with LPG. I am just wondering how my qualifications will work in Oz and/ or what i will have to do to work as a plumber in Oz? All info appreciated.

Re: Plumber to oz
is there no temporary training or could i work as a mate. Is there anywhere in oz it is possible to. Surely plumbing is just plumbing where ever you are in the world. Would it be worth going down the skilled visa line or looking for a sponsor before travel? Not that i wouldnt be happy to work on seasonal work. That would be great to do too! just seems waste of me skill.

Doesn't really matter what you, I or anyone thinks about skills transferring from one country to another, every country has its own rules and there's no getting around them.
To get a sponsored job for skilled migration, your trade would need to be on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) or the Consolidated Skills Occupation List (CSOL) - and you'd still have to get your skills assessed.
You could look for job opportunities as an unqualified plumber's assistant once you were here, but to be honest I don't like your chances. The unemployment rate here is about the same as in the UK, and even if there was a job going you could only take it for 6 months, so you'd probably lose out to someone who could commit to the job permanently.
The work/holiday visa is designed for young people who want to visit Australia and have a holiday, with some work to fund that. I think you need to approach your 417 trip here with that in mind, and if you happen to land some work as a plumber's mate, then that's a bonus.
Don't forget that you need to work for 3 months in a designated regional area during your first 12 month 417 if you want to apply for a second year.
Enjoy your time in Oz

Hi thanks it is on the list. BUt I think i will just have to find seasonal work work on a 417. Possibly see about doing a course in the evening while there. Any idea how long and how much this will cost? i will may look at gettting sponsorship. i was under the impression there was a bit of a building boom in australia at the moment. Is there anyway i can do exam in UK at all.

Not sure if cost is the same as a sparky's assessment but if it is, total cost is somewhere between $2500 and $3000!
