Your agent should have advised you of how to prepare your assessment for the correct body I'm assuming it was the TRA and he applied as a mechanic 4411-11.
Did he train as a mechanic or can you show proof of on the job learning? Did you include enough details with the application i.e..references, any courses he attended, all certificates and qualifications, details of the tasks performed as part of his job and what specific tools are used for which job.
I applied as a bricklayer and my personal job description had to detail every tool used and from reading it a lay person should have full knowledge of my job. To give you an idea it was about 5 pages long and that was short compared to some. I used http://www23.hrdc-drhc.gc.ca/2001/e/groups/7281.shtml as a guideline, the one for motor mechanic is http://www23.hrdc-drhc.gc.ca/2001/e/groups/7321.shtml it's a Canadian website but gives a better description in plain English than any Aussie ones I found, our agent now uses it for assessment applications.

Hi Sean and Debbie
Thankyou for your reply, yes you are correct in assuming it was the TRA and we didnt prepare it we paid our agent to prepare it for us. My partner did not train as a mechanic but a vehicle body builder, but he can show proof off on the job learning and six years work experience, proof of job training was not asked for by our agent. Our agent also thought it was not neccessary to include my partners qualifications(education)and training. The company my partner works for at present is a huge successfull corporate company, so you can imagin the amount of 'pat on the back'glowing character and employer references he collected together and posted special delivery to our agent. We spent alot of time and hard work, as we all do to get the result we need. In reflection, it seams our agent has overlooked the need to provide proof of training and qualifications, one would assume this was a key element, but you trust your agent or should we??!!!!!!!!!!

You can re-apply for a different trade and to different bodies until you receive a positive response so all is not lost. Go to the Gov web site http://www.immi.gov.au/ From there you can download the booklets and forms [it's free now] look at
http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/1121i.pdf to choose the skill best suited to the job Mike does. You can get another 10 points if you have worked at the same trade for 3 out of the last 4 years.
Good luck

we spent weeks getting our info ready to send off for skills recognition, loads of references, work experience etc, my hubby is in the motor trade, (trike builder). our agent was brilliant, he wouldnt send it of untill we had all the necessary information, which really did take a while to get sorted. good luck.

To echo a previous comment, try the Prestons. I've been chatting to them (well, probably driving them up the wall really!) about general things and Mr Preston has indeed just been assessed claiming the full 60 points. He has a good trade qualification with plenty of experience.
I'm big on motorsports stuff myself (I don't work in it but I know my stuff) and have found that motorsport is an industry that is very heavy underrepresented in Australia. As to this being the reason why it's not particularly well recognised as unknown.
The Preston's should be hanging around in the migration or lounge forum tonight (Monday) (I demanded that the reappear for a lap of honour for their success). Drop by and pose your questions.
Hope this helps.

Just thought I would let you know the response from my agent's Manager on the result of my partners TRA application.
My Agents Manager said quote: Due to the amount of applications they receive he can only imagin that they have increased there standards and are nit-picking, the application was complete and a year ago would have sailed through.unquote
STRANGE WHEN THE TRA CLOSING COMMENTS WERE
(The evidence supplied with this TRA application has failed to meet the evidence requirements outlinded-resulting in the application being refused.
He refused to refund the money we paid to them to prepare my partners application.
We are dissappointed, but hey life is to short, watch this space we will get to oz in the end
Thanks to everyone for your replies

Don't give in yet! was your agent in UK or Aust? Name and shame them on here, you may stop someone else making the mistake of using them. If you kept a copy of everything you sent [or the agent did] it may pay you to get a second opinion from one of the reputable agents that post on the forum.
