Default Please check my cost of living comparison

Hi. Could someone test my assumptions here please. I am trying to work out the cost of living in Australia based on real values. Wherever possible I have tried to use actual costs here, so for example my utility bill costs are based on forum posts, my broadband is based on the actual advertised prices in Melbourne etc etc.

Sterling amounts are just rounded from what I actually pay now.

Costs are all per month.

Food £200 $200
Petrol £120 $60
Car Insurance £50 $100
Life Insurance £15 $30
Sky/Broadband £65 $150
Water £20 $120
Council Tax £100 $0
Elec/Gas £100 $150
Car Tax £15 $50
Gym £35 $52
Entertainment £200 $400
TV License £9 $0
Other £100 $200
Mobile Phone £30 $60

Total £861 $2078

Food & petrol more like per week unless just 1 person or you prepare from basics and you commute by public transport (~$30 / week)

My Foxtel was $50/month and ADSL Broadband was $60/month in Melbourne

Do you already know how many kms you are going to drive, and hence how much petrol you'll need? Will you be commuting by car? Where to/from?

Your Oz car ins sounds expensive...is that just one car? What sort of car? My annual car ins was $500 for a 2 year old 4WD

House insurance?

You'll need ambulance cover in Vic - $100/year for a family, $50 single

No house phone - just a mobile?

And food bills...it all depends on what brand you buy, and how many people you're feeding!!

I think my gas and elec were cheaper but difficult to say - I just looked at the bills and half were estimated. We had a 3 bed house, we used the heating for about 9 months of the year.

Not sure that either your £ or $ amounts are adding up right.

Whoops. Took them off a spreadsheet and copied the wrong total column.

The costs were based on same mileage as I do now. So if it costs me 120 in petrol now then based on the same mileage . . .

As for food. Again, simply like for like. If my weekly shop is £50, then $100 in Oz.

Ummmm, well, I THINK (but depends on circumstances) that especially for those too, it won't work out!
Food is said to be much more expensive in Oz.

And you will probably do more mileage. Everything is more spread out.

Where are you heading?
Where do you live now (if that's not in your profile)

Are you alone, have kids, how old?

Will you be getting one or two cars? Remember that commuting by public transport CAN be difficult, depends on city I guess. And also things more spread out, schools and shops (often) further away...

Ok, not sure how you got £120 of fuel in UK = $60 fuel in Oz.
Unleaded:
UK - say, 78p/litre
Melbourne (average this week)- 90c/litre
so £120 petrol in UK = 150 litres = $138

not sure myself if this is the right logic to apply...somebody correct me if nec.!!

This is the rice, water & potatoes diet. Plus porridge whenever you feel like it.

Cheap and you get thin as well.
