Places to live in Brisabne
I am sure this has been asked a thousand times, but got loads to do now that my visa is hopefully just around the corner.
So need some advise on places to think of living in.
Got 2 small children (5 and 7) and 1 older (19). looking at renting for short term and then buying or even building.
So would like to rent in an area where we could possibly build etc.
This way kids do not have to go through anymore changes etc (making friends, changing schools etc)
So if anyone could help me out I would really appricate it.
Thanks in advance

Mango Hill, or Northlakes - lots of building going on there. Lots of Brits, S. African's too.

We live in Brookfield which is in the Western Suburbs only about half an hour from the city. It really is a lovely place with both good public schools and also private schools not far away. The Queensland university is also only about a half hour drive away. In my opinion, living here you get the best of both worlds with a ruralish setting but also near to the city when you need it.
Good luck with where you decide to live.

or by car at 2am?
ETA: Not disputing that Brookfield is a nice place to live or anything, and there are good and great, free and expensive schools in Kenmore and Indooroopilly - but if you expect anyone to get from there to the CBD in 30 minutes for an 8am start you're kidding yourself!

Well besides the traffic which is inevitable and will be wherever you live its a nice place to live. The only drawback is no station in the near vicinity but the one that goes to the City is not far away.

Most of the outer fringes of Brisbane have new estates in places like Springfield Lakes/Ipswich, Logan, Bayside, North Lakes etc. Search for "home and land packages".
Note that these places are a long way from the CBD and can make the daily commute painful if tied to a city job location.
One that I think has potential is http://rochedaleestates.com.au/Roche...bout/index.htm as it is only 12km from the CBD and has a busway station nearby with a quick run into the city.

Re: Places to live in Brisabne
Why on earth would anyone want to leave the UK to live in some of the suburbs mentioned in this thread?

Re: Places to live in Brisabne
Depends what your looking for.
Close to the city, nice houses, transport i would recommend - Red Hill, Paddington, Kelvin Grove, Bardon, Ashgrove, Newmarket or Grange.
I prefer the North Side of the River but if you wanted to live Southside then Suburbs like Bulimba & Morningside but the commute to work takes forever
If you want to live near the Beaches then suburbs around Redcliffe but transport to the city isn't great out there.
Rental market is fast moving here, places come and good daily. Took us a good 3 weeks of solid looking before we found the right place and the right price. It might not seem long but when you need somewhere that feels like forever. www.realestate.com.au is probably the best one

One big consideration is $$$. If you are coming over with plenty, obviously you can live/build anywhere you choose within reason. However if you are coming over with an average amount of $$$ and will be earning an average wage, then you need to start looking at the offerings on the link above.
Bear in mind that you don't need to live in a gigantic planned estate/suburb just to get your new build house. There are properties all over Brisbane being subdivided and redeveloped, enabling you to buy a new house in an established suburb. Of course this comes at a premium.

Re: Places to live in Brisabne
There are also plenty of smaller new estates in places not as far away as those master planned estates. These are usually more integrated with surrounding established suburbs but on the downside you will not get a lake

Re: Places to live in Brisabne
You can also look for sales of older properties which are not worth renovating - one in our street recently went at auction (from the Public Trustee) for not much over land value: it has now been demolished and a new house is being built on the site. That way you get the house you want in an established older suburb, rather than in a new subdivision which has not yet had all the services (shops, hotels, transport) fully developed.
