hi guys
Also check out:
Marapana wildlife world (just half a km further up than 'Geranium World'!!...I kid you not
) where you get to hand feed a variety of native animals.
E-Shed markets at Fremantle (down by the shipping passenger terminal behind the train station), can't remember the opening times but think it's the same as the other markets in Freo. Well worth a browse, and the food court is good!!
Serpentine Falls, somewhere off the Mandurah road, a tiny little town with some great walks, barbies etc.
The WA Maritime Museum my husband reckons is worth a look.
(PS, hubby works in Fremantle prison....they rent out the cells as office space in certain areas of the prison :scared: ...he reckons it's not scary...but then none of the ever volunteer to stay after dark!!!:scared: )
There is also the Hotham Valley Tourist Railway who run various trips including a Wizards Express for the Harry Potter fanatics. Telephone: 9221 4444
Have to agree about Rockingham foreshore, it's beautiful and you have an excellent chance of spotting dolphins there. Follow the scenic drive just around the way though to Safety Bay and Penguin Island....absolutely breathtaking! I know, I see it everyday!!!
Lots more when I remember them!!
love sophia xx

Hi Janey
Just picked up your great list.
I have just put a posting as my wife likes a quiet hack out every weekend (in the UK) and if we are to move to Perth she will have to do some riding there.
In your posting you mentioned Brookleigh Equestrian Estate - how far is this from Perth and what are the costs like.
We were in Eastern Aus last year and the riding costs were horrendous and just geared for tourists.
We are now looking at Perth as a possible destination having just got our visa and, as Hilary wants to ride every weekend, it has to be not too far from Perth and not too expensive.
Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks and best wishes

Thanks Janeyray for your list. Had a crappy week at work & needed to get out & about this weekend so went to Bells Rapids as recommended. Really enjoyed it, saw all the wildflowers, lots of birds etc. Only problem is hubby has now got ideas about doing the Avon descent next year!

Janeyray, great idea to put the road names as well.
Think we are on a jolly out to Mandurah tomorrow.

2. Hilliarys Boat harbour - lovely safe beach for children, water park and excellent restaurants. Lovely fish and chip shop -Sharkys.
Hillarys Boat Harbour in 1988 (I think it looks about the same now):

Great list!
We've been in Perth a couple of years now, and would add the following to the list:
FREMANTLE JAIL:
Fantastic! The best place we've been so far - a really informative, creepy, and insightful look at how things used to be (convicts cut the original stone for the main buildings and lived in tiny cells with no sanitation and no cooling - in a limestone building that retains the heat!), up to the recent past - the place was operational up to the 1980's. You visit the execution chamber where WA's last hanging took place in 1968, Moondyne Joe's (famous bush ranger & criminal sort) 'escape-proof' cell, and a stunning protestant chapel with the first example of a vaulted ceiling made from local hardwood (The early Brits has to invent new techniques to get the stuff bent into an arch). Also some surviving examples of Aboriginal art from convicts who went on to do better things for themselves.

If you don't have (young) kids take the candlelight tour at night! I think it's wednesdays and fridays , you have to book.
It's really cool, you only get a tiny torch, and they have a few surprises! :scared:
While you're nearby, visit The Roundhouse on the beach of Fremantle.
It's what they used as jail before the prison.

PINNACLES DESERT - 3 hours or so drive north, but a great way to experience some of the sheer open space of WA - and also practice overtaking triple-trailer roadtrains! (HINT - very carefully and on a very loooong stretch of straight road!). They also have a reserve up there for some of the oldest life forms on earth - Stromalites (big bubbles in the mud!). The Pinnacles themselves are just so weird and out of place that it's worth the trip - you will also see the devestation of bush fire damage for many, many Km's on the way into the park.
MONKEY MIA:
A great 2-day drive north, with a stop 1 way in Kalbarri to feed the pelicans in the morning, and a stop on the return leg in Geraldton (a great B&B here is the GreenGables - http://www.wn.com.au/GREENGABLES/ - get the Fawlty Towers music and the request for guests with a sense of humour!. Christina and Henry are the 2 great Aussie types who run the place and make you feel just like one of the family, and it was great to meet real Aussie travellers here stopping over on long journeys back to inland towns from meetings & visits).
Monkey Mia itself is a small resort (and expensive - stay in the nearby town of Denham if you can and drive the 10 minutes to see the dolphins), where dophins arrive from the wild each day for a free feed. My wife and daughter both got to hand-feed a dolphin each, which they loved - but no petting of the animals allowed! Accomodation on the resort is basic, and damn hot in the summer.

Kalbarri is also great for the great coast and the river gorges.
Monkey Mia is in the area called Shark Bay. There you can also find Shell Beach. Tiny little white shells/no sand.
Here's a pic of one of the most famous landmarks in Kalbarri. You come across it when visiting the river gorges. It's called Nature's Window, and you just have to make a pic, eventhough it is very cliche!
