Places to go during a weekend in Brisbane
Calling all Brisbanites
Off to Brissie from Adelaide for work from Wednesday til Friday lunchtime in a couple of weeks and decided to take my 14-year old daughter with me and extend the stay until Tuesday. She wants to go to Australia zoo, is that easy to get to by public transport or am I better getting a car hired for the weekend?
Where else would you recommend visiting, or is there anywhere to avoid?
We like live music (classical and rock and can cope with jazz and folk at a push), retail therapy and scenery.
Also where's there a cheap place to hire a car if we decide to get one?
Thanks guys
Claire.

We caught the train to Australia zoo from Brisbane to Beerwah and you get a free pick up from the station to the zoo. It was all straight forward and seemed to work well. According to the link below there is also a special rail package which may be worth looking in to.

Loads of retail therapy in Queen Street Mall! She'll love it. Catch the city cat and take a trip along the river. A fantastic and cheap way to see the city. A trip to South Bank is a must. If you're into culture there is a museum at South Bank but there's also a great market on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Bit cold for swimming now at the beach there. In the evening there are loads of bars in the city and clubs in New Farm (close to city centre). A walk through the botanic gardens is nice and if you can travel out to Mount Coot-tha (not far at all) there are bigger botanic gardens there that give free tours. If you can get to the top of Mount Coot-tha the views are fabulous. There's a cafe and gift shop at the top too. The Customs House on the River often has free classical concerts on a Sunday performed by University of Queensland students. This Sunday morning at 11.30 am the prize winners are performing. Just turn up. Something for all tastes.

Hire car – there are all the standard car hire places available at the airport. Personally I use Europcar but that’s just personal. Plenty of deals for all types of car available online.
Places to go: Shopping
Outlet / warehouse shopping: DFO just adjacent to the airport or Stones Corner (10 mins drive from city centre)
High end fashion – errr, go to Sydney or Melbourne! Seriously, some lovely boutiques in Paddington along LaTrobe terrace. If you do go shopping there, have brunch/lunch at Sassafrass (opposite the Woolworths shopping centre) – does lovely food and is one of the hip places to be.
General mall type shopping at Indooroopilly, Myer Centre in the city and various other Westfield shopping towns.
Places to go: Scenery
Mt Coot-tha lookout – go for lunch or late afternoon tea and just watch the city.
Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens and Planetarium
Drive out to Wellington Point or Victoria, have a mooch around and look at the bay.
Places to go / things to do: general
Southbank – restaurants, inner city beach, shopping. Go to Friday night markets.
City Cat – take a ride on the CityCat to Bulimba and have a meal on Oxford Street. Or stop at New Farm park and have tea at the teahouse.
Science Museum
Queensland Museum
Jupiters Casino
Riverside markets at Eagle St Pier on Sundays
China Town in the Valley – markets on weekends. If you go, have Yum Cha at King of Kings (upstairs restaurant) – complete madness but great authentic yum cha
Eating Out
James St in the Valley
Sassafrass at Paddington
King of Kings in the Valley (China Town mall)
New Farm – loads of great restaurants
Emporium in the Valley (choice of different restaurants – personally can recommend Mecca Bah)
Check out http://www.ourbrisbane.com/ for what’s on in terms of live music and plenty of info on Brisbane in general.
Hope you have a great long weekend.
