It's a standard recipe. Can you imagine the awkwardness if a family actually were reasonably intelligent, incisive, informed and presented better than the presenter - they would not have a programme.
Spot on. I applied for one of these programmes back in the UK. I was told I wasn't suitable because they were looking for someone that was going in with there eyes shut!

Not just with eyes shut, but brain ticking over too...

There is a programme called 'Escape to The Country' which has a nice line in featuring Little Englanders all desperate to buy in the country. They are much the same, ordinary but desperate to escape that ordinariness - do you see the resemblance...?

Every time they get shown a room in a prospective house all they can say
is

"Lovely"
"Nice aspect" (they've obviously been watching way to many reno programmes).

or they turn their noses up at what is quite adequate - they want character but most would not see character if it was staring them in the face. One bloke said he was looking for a 'Vicar of Dibley' village - as soon as he said that - his credibility went out the window.
