Petrol and Diesel Australia
When buying a car in OZ
Are there the same incentives in OZ for paying a little extra for a diesal vehcile?
Do petrol stations stock both as is common in UK?
Are there clear benefits of choosing either or does it not really matter.
Grateful for some car talk!

Re: Petrol and Diesel Australia
Both common in most fuel stations, Diesel is a little higher than petrol... husband asleep who takes notice of these things so can't quote figures. We went for Diesel due to the fact they normaly last longer and although fuel costs more normaly get more to a tank.

There is a benefit by choosing petrol you can also opt for an LPG conversion on most makes of vechicles, the Government give a cash rebate for having the conversion done not sure exactly how much but is worth checking this out. Lpg here is costs between 50- 60 cents a litre but same as petrol and diesel these change daily by up to 10 cents.
Most service stations stock LPG but usually only 1 or 2 pumps its really nice to look at the pump and see the litres clocking up faster than the dollars. My Ute has both about $70 for tank of petrol and $26ish for LPG. Great when you fill up 3 or 4 times a week.
Good luck with what you decide

I'm a big fan of diesel and have 2 diesel cars. Diesel cars are getting more popular in Australia although they are way behind Europe. Until recently, it was only European makers that sold diesel cars here but now Holden and Mazda have them too. Diesel is usually a bit more expensive than unleaded but at the moment it's the same price or even cheaper.

Re: Petrol and Diesel Australia
You use on average 48% more LPG than Petrol and you lose about 22% of your performance. For example:
A Petrol Ford Falcon 4.0 Litre has 190kW and economy is 10.7L/100km (4 speed auto)
A Gas Ford Falcon 4.0 Litre has 158kW and economy is 15.9L/100km. (4 speed auto). The benefit is the CO2 emissions are a little lower and at the moment it costs 47c per litre compared to $1.37 for unleaded.

The V8 fairlane (5 litre) is being converted to LPG end of next month.Conversion is $2900,I get $3000 back in govt grants so it is free.I need to come up with the 3k and fill in the paperwork at the converters, then wait for the govt to pay me back ,after they have checked engine numbers etc comply with the paperwork.
Some of the big trucking companies have diesel/lpg engines.I think they claim 20-30% better mileage, when you are using thousands of litres per week a very useful saving. It should be borne in mind that some of those big things may only be doing 2-3 klms per litre.Probably not worth converting a car to D/LPG.
As far as I am aware there are no incentives for diesel,in a country rich in gas rather then crude it makes sense. We export gas,we import oil to refine petrol and diesel, although not all crude is imported.
For pulling heavy loads or towing ,then gas does not have the calorific value of petrol ,it does use a lot of it and economy nosedives.
Also bear in mind the fairmont was converted in 91,conversion kits are a lot more advanced now and are linked to engine management systems, and all the car computer systems.
Having the dual fuel on across australia trips was very useful, has a range of around 1100 klms on two full tanks.

Does any one know what it costs to convert a ford territory ghia turbo? We had our car converted in the UK. With the government grant we are seriously considering it but can't find any info on it.

Look in yellow pages, ring around a few converters, every one of them will give you a price. If it can be done.

Do the petrol stations still rack up the prices whens it's holidays? and long weekends??
A few years ago they used to do it.
