Pet food in Oz
We are taking the cat and I've been wonder about the pet food.
How were your pets when you changed them over to new food? What's it like and what's the cost?

Hi Mandy,
Our 4 fly out on the 13th Nov for their 4 week holiday at Spotswood and I had the same thoughts. Not sure what you're feeding yours here, but ours are on a mix of Hills & Iams (depending on their fussiness!)- it looks like Hills is available from most Aussie vets and Iams is sold under their other name - Eukanuba - although they have an Oz website - www.eukanuba.com.au, it's not very good at telling you where you can buy it from. Coles.com.au online shop sell Purina, Whiskas & Kitekat dried food, Whiskas & Kitekat tinned & pouches and others I don't recognise. www.homeshop.com.au (Safeway) seem to sell the same. The dried food prices and pouches look cheaper to me, tinned is a bit difficult to compare as I haven't bought any for ages and their tins seem to be different sizes.

I've heard that they have Either Iam's/ Eukanuba out there, Not too helpful as our kitten has had problems settling to a paricular food but gets on really well with James Wellbeloved, to my knowledge they don't have this in Oz.
Our other cat will eat anything so I have no qualms about changing her food at all.

There seem to be quite a few cat food products along the lines of James Wellbeloved in Oz - put natural cat food in the google.com.au search.
I was thinking of letting Spotswood sort out what they will & won't eat - I'll just tell them to only give them dried food then they can tell me what they preferred when we collect them, and we won't have a dozen half-eaten packets of food in the cupboard from all the trials!

Just shoot the kangaroos in the garden, cats and dogs love roo meat.
Seriously as kangaroos are considered a pest in OZ and they shoot them, roo meat is cheap for pets. Mix in some veg and the odd egg or chicken frame, a dash of flaxseed oil and the odd dinner scraps - happy as.

I also buy from catteries the specialised foods that supermarkets don't sell. Foods that are good for hairballs, teeth, bones. $30-$40 for a big bag. Lasts ages.

Hi
I have just been to "Better Pets and Gardens" for dog and cat food. Not sure if they are exclusive to Perth though.
I usually buy Iams, cos that is what I fed mu UK cats on. I think dry food is better during heat as it won't attract flies, they won't lay eggs and you won't get maggots (like the MIL did in UK when she fed her moggie in her conservatory!)
They also had Hills science diet, Eukanuba, and some others I recognised but can't remember now. They have bags for certain breeds, certain weights, diet food, kitten food, puppy food, hairball stuff, glossy coat stuff.
They also have loads of the usual treat stuff (pigs ears, chew sticks, beef bits - you name it you will probably get it)
Hope this helps
