Hi Laura,
You've put some cracking info on this thread. Everything I had a question about you've answered. I've been on to GA today and they're posting what I need out to me tomorrow. Would love to know how your dog gets on as I'm paranoid just like everyone else. We have a german Sheperd who was a rescue dog and in a very sorry state when we got her, we couldn't possibly leave her incase she ended up in another bad home (nobody we know wants a dog). Keep up the good work darl, your info is invaluable, and I wisk you and your dog all the best on your travels. I feel a spot of karma coming your way.
Marie :)

Hi Marie

They are just like family aren't they?! German Shepards can be quite timid nervous dogs can't they? - how do you think yours will be. Like you I can't wait to hear how Montu gets on!

Have sent you and Laura some karma for also being neurotic dog owners!!! :D

Re: Pet Export

Our Cassie was seriously mistreated before we got her. She was made to have pups when she was only a pup herself (she's 2 in March) and she carried them wrong, from what we understand she had to have a cesaraen and puppies died and she became very ill. Her owner became homeless so he and Cassie lived in a small car for a few months. It was actually the owners brother who rescued the dog and contacted us too see if we wanted her-we had recently been in touch with a german sheperd rescue centre but at the time we contacted them they didn't have any young females which is what we wanted, so anyway he contacted us and we drove miles to pick her up. If I said she was underweight when we got her would be an underestimate, she was well skinny, we've had her a year now and she's still not as big as she should be. She is no longer timid and I live on school premises so she gets loads of exercise on playground and field aswell as her walks outside the school grounds. There is no way I could let her live somewhere without us let alone somewhere with a little garden after the amount of space she's used to. She does love going for drives so hopefully she'll be OK but it doesn't stop me worrying, she's never been in kennels and she's a bit spoilt so I don't think she'll do so well in quarantine.
Keep us posted as to how you're doing and I'll do the same.
Karma coming, Marie

ps, trying to talk hubby in to letting us take cat too. She was a present to me and born on my 16th birthday, she's coming up for 9 so is getting middle aged mardiness at present and she's not very forgiving. Wer also have relatives that would have her if needs be. She's called Sassy, what with that being her name and Cassie being the dogs name, I'm bound to get forms wrong cos they get called each others names now! I named the cat and the dog was named when we got her, too cruel to change names when they're used to them so we put up with the confusion.

aww i am going to cry poor cassie, at least she has nice loving parents now, it makes me feel sick the way people can treat dogs, how can they do it??? They must be so evil and sick......

Cassie will love to be in Aus and you have to take her with you no matter what.

I know its awful, but i keep on telling myself its better for her to do this for 30 days than for me to rehome her and risk her going to someone like Cassies old owner or worse, i wold never forgive myself!
So we are defo doing the right thing!

We are planning to move in november as haven't even though about selling house yet so timescale wise I think any sooner would be overly optimistic. I am just about to submit visa application in next week as soon as I have all my employment statements - and I have my medicals booked for the 3rd of Feb (we are frontloading as I am a nurse)

So are you going to drive your dog down to GA?

We are planning to go to Brisbane.

Where in gla are you from? I am from Springburn (brought up in Bishopbriggs originally)

Thats awful Laura - very expensive. How far are GA having to drive Montu?

I had an e-mail off a guy who basically told me to organise everything myself and save a fortune - like you though I feel that I will have too much on my plate without worrying about getting Poppy there too - Are you annoyed at GA - why did they not tell you that before?

Lynn
ps if anyone wants a copy of the e-mail then PM me your e-mail address as he gave me very useful info on how to organise it yourself and it sounds pretty straight forward.

Hi Laura

I spoke to Golden Arrow today re my dog. They said my dog would have to stay with them for 3 nights before his flight to get him used to his pet crate and get him ready for his trip. Why does Montu have to stay with them for 5 days??

Suzy

because GA are saying that they can only pick her up on the friday or sat and she doesnt fly till the tuesday 8th, so would be 3 or 4 nights (4 or 5 days)that she has to stay, hopefully they will come and get her on the sat, then its only 3. (sorry i counted wrong).

Shropshire to Teesside is about a four hour drive, for montu to be picked up.

I wish that we could drop her off there, but we go to Melbourne on the 30th Jan, THIS SUNDAY ARRGGHHHH!!!!!!!!

Hi all

We are taking our border collie BLUE and have had a quote from Golden Arrow for £2300. The thing is we are so worried as he has epilepsy and our concern is that he may fit in the crate. He has about 1 fit a month and they started june 2004, GA have told us that they have sent other dogs with this problem and that their medication is given before the flight but they cannot be sedated on the flight. Has anyone else sent an epileptic dog to oz.

sally

By the way what is this Karma thing and can I get any.

Hi all,

I have an appointment tomorrow at the vets with my 12 year old dog (maverick). Gonna get him checked out medically to see if he is fit enough to handle the flight etc.. Our vet is also an expert on pet export, any good advice i get from i him will post to this thread.

Hi
You must be very worried about Blue - I guess you have to just get them to give his medicine like GA have said. How unwell does he become after one of these seizures - does he not just sleep for a while after? (I am a nurse and I am just thinking of how humans normally react!)

It will be worth it to have hime there in Australia with you.

p.s Have sent you some karma - go to 'my profile' at the top of your screen and click on that - you can then view who has sent you karma. If you want to send karma back to anyone ;) just click the blue karma box below that persons poat and leave a short message (don't forget to put your name or it becomes anon karma!!!) Once so many people give you karma you get a blue box below your user name.

i've spoken to our vet about our mollie dog who is also epileptic. she has barely noticeable fits but the aftermath is horrendous and leaves her entirely debilitated for days. we have to keep her medicated to avoid the fits just because of the aftermath. he was very reassuring and said fits are more likely when a dog is very relaxed so the stress is unlikely to cause extra problems. he said, so long as she has had her meds there is no extra risk. i know its slightly different for you because your dog seems to have them so frequently. i wish you luck and hope blue is ok.

Hi Laura

I am sure Montu will be fine with Golden Arrow for the slightly longer time, it is just a shame I do not stay closer to you or I would have taken Montu for you!!
Well I called Golden Arrow yesterday and requested info....low and behold it arrived first thing this morning. Very impressed so far, the guy on the phone was very helpful and obviously popped it in the post immediately. I rang them again today (already this guy must be thinking I am neurotic!!...don't know if I have spelt that correctly!!) anyway to ask about medication, my dog Max is on constant meds for lens luxation and obviously during his 24 hr flight he won't be able to get them. Golden Arrow said they would administer the meds while Max was with them and I should contact Melbourne Quarantine station directly to check all ok with them, he did not see there being a problem. Again he was very helpful. I am also going to look into doing it D.I.Y but to be honest I think Golden Arrow are going to be favourites.
Can you keep me up to date with how Montu gets on with them and also in the Quarantine Station. Are you going to visit Montu??
I have PM'd you my email address so you can keep in touch.
I have also sent you some KARMA for your trip and especially for Montu.

Is this the same worzel who said it was too expensive to take his cats?

I knew you would take them, I could just tell. Making out you werent going to take them.

And I bet they sleep on your bed and everything. :p

We are still planning to leave the eldest but then she is a bit of a loner. The middle one was always coming as she sleeps on our daughter's bed. But the new development is that Sam was determined to let the youngest come too. So Bella is now dripping in bells off her collar and she hasn't caught any wildlife since which looks like earning her a place on the plane. I can't say I am too disappointed :)

I knew it!

Actually, I am panicking a bit. Just read a whole thread on medicals on another site.

I hope my asthma doesnt stop me getting in. After all, I will be buying my own inhalers in Oz.

I use to get it quite bad in my early twenties, but I was last in hospital nearly 6 years ago with Flu.

Just use inhalers now and if anything sets me off, its cold damp weather.

I hope to God it doesnt affect my application.

Your inhalers would have to be made of gold to cost the state $20,000 over 5 years. You shouldn't have any problems.

No (getting into a state, nervously sips water), but I have just been reading the medical form.

It wants to know every single date of every single time I have been in hospital.

That was when I was 18 (most anyway), I cant remember that.

Someone comfort me please before I piss myself. :(

Relax girl! You either have to have something contagious or expensive to treat over the first 5 years to stop you getting in. The worst that may happen is they make you category B and ask for a few more tests.

I know worzel, its just im so worried, i have to take it in turns as to what I worry about each day.

It usually alternates between that rude word TRA and now its health.

And I havent even started worrying about HIV tests and TB tests :scared:

Today, I shall worry about asthma and stuff.

I read on PomsinPerth site, that someone said she just had to state which operations or hospital admissions she had in the past 5 years.

If thats the case, then everything is hunkey dorey.

I am in need of some severe comforting and babying at the moment.

Its 4pm, nearly time to go home, have a bath, tea, and do some TRA.

Jesus, it takes over your life it does.

Just a suggestion but if you are thinking of exporting your dogs together in the same crate just a few things you may want to consider....

They will be in their crate for quite a long time as it is sealed by the vet before transport and cant be opened until they reach the destination. I understand what you mean though as they may not be as stressed if they are together but if your dogs are anything like mine a golden retriever is rather a large breed and they will need one heck of a crate! Also the crate has to meet the required standard so that they have adequate room to sit down without banging their head and lie down comfortably with enough room from the tip of the front paws to bum.

I hope this helps, please post any info as I would be interested to hear how you get on,
Best of luck,
Karen :)
