Perth - where to live?

Hi. We might be moving from Sydney to Perth and havent the faintest idea where to live! We are a couple who like to be reasoably close to the centre, but as long as it is on some form of public transport then flexible. Would love to be near a beach, though not sure we can afford it. We have a budget of $500 per week and need at least a 2 bed appartment and prefer new / modern type of places. The area MUST be safe as i work away from home and OH will be alone.

Have a look at Subiaco, about 3KM out of the city and about 8KM from the Ocean, and is on the train line from Perth to Fremantle.
I just had a quick look on www.realestate.com.au and there's options within your $500pw rental budget.
have a look for property id 403467515

Subiaco and surroundings is nice, also Leederville, Mt Hawthorn, Tuart Hill, Coolbinia, Mt Lawley, and on the West site have a look in and around West Leederville. All Western suburbs are nice and good areas.
This website is good to get to know Perth suburbs http://www.aussiemove.com/city/city.asp?f=9&c=7.
Most areas in Perth are safe but I personally would avoid some north-east suburbs like Balga, Girrawheen, Koondoola, Mirrabooka, and further east Armadale and surroundings.

Alos have a look at Freo, East Freo, Bicton, that stretch.
Also Como, South Perth.
An apartment for $500pw should be relatively easy.
